The Suns and Blazers both had to grind out opening-night wins on Wednesday.
Phoenix took down Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks on ESPN, 107-105, as 4.5-point home favorites, leaving the team 1-0 straight up but 0-1 against the spread.
Portland, on the other hand, entered its road contest against Sacramento as 2.5-point road underdogs and came away with the win straight up, 115-108.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns couldn’t have found a much more dramatic way to beat Dallas on Wednesday. After falling down by 22 points in the third quarter, the team rallied, ultimately taking the final lead with just 9.7 seconds on the clock.
Damion Lee tried to defer to All-Star Devin Booker, but Book, with all the confidence in the world in his supporting cast, gave it right back and watched Lee sink the game-winner jumper.
For all the talk coming into this season that the Suns may be something between past their prime and overrated, a win like this sets the tone for the season. The Suns don’t need to win pretty to win. They don’t even need their star to take over late.
Against Portland, Phoenix has a chance to not only keep spreading the wealth but to be the one going up big early.
Both the Blazers and Suns had momentum-gaining victories, but Phoenix feels more ready to prove its success is sustainable, and beating the Mavs is a better indicator of competition than beating the Kings.
Portland Trail Blazers
None of that is to knock what the Blazers actually did on the court Wednesday night. They also proved they can win when it’s not pretty, as the game itself was never as comfortable as their seven-point margin of victory would suggest.
The Blazers will get better games from Damian Lillard. His shot wasn’t there, and the three-point arc, in particular, was not kind to him (1-of-8 from deep). The catch is that his preseason was also uninspiring, so banking on him to find the stroke against a Phoenix team that was a top three defense a year ago is a tough bet.
Look for Anfernee Simons to get even more aggressive as Lillard relocates his missing long ball, and expect Jerami Grant to stay motivated in all aspects of the game after his successful debut.
Where the Blazers could really stumble against Phoenix is defensively. One game against Sacramento isn’t enough to give any real sample size, but it’s where this team—no matter who has been in Damian Lillard’s supporting cast—has always struggled. And again, it’s tough to picture Portland figuring it out (or proving it’s no longer an issue) in Game 2 against these Suns.
