Tuesday, February 8th, the Phoenix Suns, and Philadelphia 76ers play for the first time this season. The Suns will host the second meeting on March 27th in Phoenix.
The Suns are playing a back-to-back set having defeated the Bulls 127-124 on Monday while the 76ers defeated the Bulls 119-108 on Sunday.
In a rarity the Suns aren’t the favorite which has something to do with them playing on consecutive nights.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns second double-digit win streak came to end highlighting the roster depth and how each and every player knows their role and delivers it.
They are what I would call a “professional team”. They might not be as exciting as the Warriors or Grizzlies but they are definitely the most professional.
Every team has dealt with adversity this year but none have handled it with as much ease and success as the Suns.
There are few if any roster gaps. Offensively, they utilize ball and player movement until they find the mismatch and play to their defensive identity.
With only 10 losses on the season finding areas of weakness is a challenge – so I point you in the direction of the stats master John Schuhmann:
The Suns don’t allow a lot of 3-point attempts – they have the league’s 12th lowest opponent 3-point rate (3PA/FGA) — but half of their 10 losses have come in the five games that their opponents have made at least 17 3s.
Opponents aren’t jumping up and down over that knowledge especially when you consider the Warriors and Jazz make the most 3-pointers and that number is shy of those 17 triples (14.6 per game).
Most teams won’t have the ability to consistently connect 10 let alone 17 perimeter shots and hence we return to why the Suns are so difficult to beat.
Abdel Nader (knee), Landry Shamet (ankle), Cameron Payne (wrist), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are all out indefinitely
Philadelphia 76ers
With approximately 30 games remaining in the regular season the player who would win the Most Valuable Player Award if it was decided today would be Joel Embiid.
The big man has been nothing short of spectacular repeatedly defying the odds for the things he can do on the hardwood with his massive 7′ frame.
He’s averaging 29.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.5 blocks. That he’s missing the player the franchise tapped as the secondary star and still powering ahead makes his MVP case a slam dunk.
Sunday, the 76ers got a very important victory versus the Bulls and shocker it was Embiid’s 40 point, 10 rebound double-double that led the way.
Matisse Thybulle (shoulder) is questionable for Tuesday. Shake Milton (back) is out indefinitely. Ben Simmons remains away from the team dealing with mental health issues and awaiting a trade.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Suns are 6-3-1 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Grizzlies
- The over/under is 8-2 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
- Philadelphia are 15-5 SU in their last 20 games
- Phoenix are 13-1 SU in their last 14 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Philadelphia’s last 6 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Phoenix’s last 6 games.
Phoenix Suns vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
This could be a preview of the NBA Finals and while I’m not picking these clubs to land there it’s not for a lack of ability.
Neither team’s season will be made by winning or losing this match but it’s an important litmus test and arguably more important for the 76ers.
Partially because it will show how Philly matches up versus the best team in the league but also highlight what impact another star on the court would provide Philly.
Timing is everything and this game occurring two days before the trade deadline feels fated for that reason alone.
