Monday, November 7th, the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers play for the first of two scheduled meetings this season. The Suns will host the second meeting on March 25th in Phoenix.
The Suns arrive having completed a baseball set versus the Blazers on Friday/Saturday which they split losing the Friday match 106-108 then winning Saturday 102-82 moving them into a three-way tie for first in the West.
The 76ers last played Friday, losing a close 104-106 battle to the Knicks. That’s two consecutive losses the latter without James Harden while Joel Embiid has been out the past three matches.
Last season, the teams played twice with Phoenix sweeping the two-game season series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 73 of their 131 matches
Phoenix Suns
I’m still on the tangent the Suns will get benefit calls as long as the team remains on the market just like the Hawks and Clippers did while they were for sale.
That said, it’s doubtful this will be a squad any team fears in the postseason. They don’t have that prerequisite toughness (the absence of Jae Crowder is noticeable!) and their bench depth isn’t as strong as last season.
Following up on the Crowder situation, the news Cameron Johnson suffered a torn meniscus will create a ton of pressure for GM James Jones to figure out the Suns’ next moves.
Much of the reason why Crowder demanded out was management wanted Johnson starting as part of the future core. Now they’re down both men and Mikal Bridges is going to have a ton of pressure on him to deliver on both ends.
Three of the Suns’ nine games have been against the Blazers and while Portland is just one game back I’m not convinced either team is the best or even second-best team in the Conference. (update: the Grizzlies’ win moves them a half-game back of Phoenix for the top spot!)
Much of the reason for the Suns’ dominance is coming on the defensive end as they hold opponents to 103.9 points per game which is tied with the Cavaliers for second best. Opponents shoot 44.3% from the field and 36.1% from the perimeter ranking fifth and 18th respectively.
Offensively, Phoenix has dropped nine positions in one week from second to 11th scoring 113.1 points per game. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 47.6% (6th) and 36.3% from the perimeter (14th).
Ish Wainright (back) and Cameron Payne (foot) are questionable for Monday. Cameron Johnson (torn meniscus) is out indefinitely. Jae Crowder (personal) remains away from the team while management seeks a trade partner for him.
Philadelphia 76ers
Joel Embiid missed three games suffering from a bout of flu but is hopeful to return Monday.
They’ll need all they can get from their big man as well as Tyrese Maxey, and Tobias Harris while Harden is sidelined. Over the next month, nine of their 14 matches are versus likely playoff-bound squads (I’m counting 2022 playoff teams plus the Cavs and Hawks in this equation).
In an odd scheduling twist, Philly will play four back-to-back sets – three in a row with only one game in between the third and fourth set and a four-day break between the first and second set.
Entering this match they are averaging 109.8 points per game which ranks 23rd in the association. Efficiency-wise they’re performing well shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.4% from the perimeter which ranks eighth and third.
Opponents average 109.2 points per game (ranking 9th). As for shooting efficiency, it’s opposite ends of the spectrum… they excel at protecting the perimeter — opponents shoot 32.8% ranked fourth-best but overall foes shoot 47.5% from the field which ranks 24th.
Embiid (illness) is questionable for Monday as is Danuel House also dealing with an illness. James Harden (foot/tendon) will miss the next month of action.
NBA Betting Trends:

- Phoenix is 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games against Philadelphia.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Philadelphia’s last 6 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Phoenix’s last 5 games on the road
- Philadelphia is 4-8 SU in their last 12 games.
Phoenix Suns vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Philly definitely plays better on their home floor although the crowd is quick to let them know when they aren’t performing up to expectations.
If Embiid plays even with Deandre Ayton in the mix the Suns won’t be able to stop him and Mikal Bridges will have his hands full stopping Maxey. Likewise, the 76ers will be pressed to limit Devin Booker although the absence of Cam Johnson is a factor.
Normally I’d lean 76ers but remember I warned of my conspiracy theory so I’m taking the Suns to win and cover.
