Game four between the eighth-seeded New Orleans Pelicans and top-seeded Phoenix Suns tips off on Sunday, April 24th. Phoenix leads the series 2-1 with victories in the opening game (110-99) and in Game 3 (114-111) while the Pelicans took Game 2 (125-114).
The Suns won the regular-season series 3-1 with wins on November 2nd (112-100), January 4th (123-110), and March 15th (131-115) while the Pelicans won the February 25th (117-102) match.
The Suns hold the advantage all-time winning 36 of the 68 matches versus the Pelicans and this is the first time the teams will meet in the postseason.
Phoenix Suns
With the loss in Game 2 and Devin Booker going down with a hamstring injury, this series is suddenly not a foregone conclusion for the Suns to win.
Although the Pelicans lost Game 3 it was only by three points and Brandon Ingram looks like the best player in the series now that Booker is sidelined.
Chris Paul used his savvy to capture the victory in Game 3 including baiting some of the younger Pels players into iffy calls as did Jae Crowder and in a match that was won by three points it made all the difference.
CP3 is going to get those calls so Willie Green needs to drill into his squad to play with discipline and to expect those foul-baiting moves from the Point God.
The big adjustment for the Suns was going big utilizing Deandre Ayton and JaVale McGee in many more offensive possessions given their size advantage.
Ayton (28 points, 17 rebounds) and Paul (28 points, 14 assists) led the way for Phoenix each registering double-doubles
Booker (hamstring) is out indefinitely while Dario Saric (knee) remains out with no definitive return date.
New Orleans Pelicans
Brandon Ingram followed up his near triple-double (37 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists) Game 2 effort with another solid performance offering 34 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a block.
The young forward had segments in the game where he was unstoppable and it begged the question if perhaps he should’ve played even more than 37 minutes.
CJ McCollum was strong as well with 30 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and a block. Rookie Herb Jones and Devonte Graham each offered 12 points as the only other Pelicans to score in double-digits.
