Tuesday, March 15th, finds the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans playing for the fourth and final time this season. Phoenix leads the series 2-1 with wins on November 2nd (112-100) and January 4th (123-110) while the Pelicans won (117-102) in the February 25th match.
Both teams last played on Sunday with the Suns anihilating the Lakers 140-111 while the Pelicans routed the Rockes 130-105.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Suns winning two of the three contests. The Suns hold the advantage all-time winning 35 of the 67 matches versus the Pelicans.
Phoenix Suns
Despite Chris Paul being out with the injured thumb and Devin Booker missing a few games in quarantine the Suns continue to play to their professional identity. Since returning from the All-Star break Phoenix has suffered four of their 14 total season losses.
With the playoffs so close it won’t be surprising if Monty Williams elects to give Devin Booker, Jae Crowder and anyone he feels could use some extra rest a game off here and there down the stretch.
They’ve witnessed how a team’s fortunes can be won or lost based on the health of the players so Williams won’t take any chances down the stretch. And with a 7.5 game edge over both the Grizzlies and the Warriors they can afford to take a cautious approach.
In the recent pummeling of the Lakers, Phoenix scored 48 first-quarter points and sailed to the easy win. Seven Suns scored in double-figures with Booker leading the way offering 30 points and 10 assists. Deandre Ayton also registered a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds.
Starters Mikal Bridges and Jae Crowder scored 18 and 11 points respectively while the bench tiro of Aaron Holiday (12), Torrey Craig (11), and JaVale McGee (10) each scored in double-digits.
Cameron Johnson (quad) is questionable for Tuesday. Chris Paul (thumb), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are out indefinitely.
New Orleans Pelicans
Without Zion Williamson all season, the Pelicans are used to dealing with injuries and bad fortune. Case in point, just as the Pels began to hit their stride and build some confidence Brandon Ingram suffered a hamstring injury sidelining him for a minimum of 10 days.
They seemed to be okay especially since CJ McCollum had integrated so smoothly fitting this Pels roster like a glove. So news he would also miss time due to COVID testing was a gut punch for a team trying to move up in the standings.
A four game win streak was mirrored by a four game losing streak. They broke out of the latter with the victory versus Houston. Luck may be on the Suns side when it comes to the closing schedule with only three opponents seeded sixth or higher with a further five currently holding a play-in berth
They are clinging to the 10th seed with the Lakers only 1.5 games ahead of them and the Blazers 1.5 games behind them.
McCollum (quarantine) is questionable for Tuesday. Larry Nance Jr. (knee), Ingram (hamstring) and Williamson (foot) are out indefinitely. Kira continues to be away from the team as he works to come back from his surgery. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season.
