On Friday, January 13th the Phoenix Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves play the third of four scheduled meetings this season. Phoenix won both prior meetings on November 1st (116-107) and 9th (129-117) and will host the final contest between these clubs on March 29th.
The Suns are playing their third game in four days having shocked the Warriors 125-113 and then got blown out 97-126 by the Nuggets in their back-to-back set on Tuesday/Wednesday. Minny also played Wednesday, getting routed 118-135 by the Pistons.
The Suns hold the all-time record between the clubs with 79 wins in 122 meetings adding to it last season when they swept the young Wolves in their three meetings.

Phoenix Suns
It might’ve been a shock that the injury-decimated Suns beat the Warriors but peel back a few layers and there is fodder to consider.
First, Damion Lee was receiving his championship ring, is married to Stephen Curry’s sister, and earmarked this match when schedules were released.
Plus Curry, Andrew Wiggins, and Andre Igoudala are all shaking off the rust from inactivity and probably took the Suns for granted given who wasn’t playing.
Factor in the Suns were the much more desperate team given they’d lost six in a row and with the prospect of completing their back-to-back in Denver versus arguably the hottest team in the association.
To that end, losing to the Nuggets also wasn’t surprising (see my preview) given the above-noted circumstances.
Stat shift
While the Suns’ offense is naturally regressing based on who they’re missing they’re experiencing an improved defensive effort.
Phoenix averages 112.7 points per game dropping to 17th (they ranked top 10 the majority of the season). They are shooting 46.4% from the field and 38.2% from the perimeter ranking 20th and third overall.
Defensively opponents score 111.4 points ranking 10th. Meanwhile, they limit opponent shooting to 47.1% from the field and 36.1% from the perimeter ranking 15th and 20th respectively. All improved ratings this week.
Deandre Ayton (ankle) is questionable while Chris Paul (hip) and Landry Shamet are out Friday. Cameron Payne (foot), Devin Booker (groin), and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out indefinitely while Jae Crowder awaits a trade.
Minnesota Timberwolves
An oddity of the Wolves’ season is they rarely do anything in singles. Other than the initial four games to start the season they’ve had a single one-game loss and two stand-alone wins otherwise the Wolves have won or lost in multiples.
They’ve registered five losing streaks of three to six games and five winning streaks with as few as two victories and as many as five in a row.
Stats
So far, the initial defensive improvement by Minnesota is long gone with the team allowing 115.5 points per game ranking 19th while they shoot 46.2 from the field and 36.9% from deep ranking seventh and 29th.
Offensively, the Wolves score 114.8 points per game (12th), while shooting 49.1% from the field (3rd) and 34.7% from the perimeter (19th).
Anthony Edwards (hip), Kyle Anderson (illness), and Taurean Prince (ankle) are questionable for Friday. Jordan McLaughlin (calf) and Karl-Anthony Towns (calf) are out indefinitely.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Given the Wolves’ trend of doing things in multiples that would equate to another loss. However, this is also the third game in four days for the Suns who are limping into Minnesota.
Additionally, while CP3 and Shamet are out again, Edwards is the player who’ll be the x-factor so his uncertain participation might be all the Suns need, given how they’re playing defense (Denver notwithstanding).
All in all, I’m sticking with the Minny trend of doing things in multiples so take the points.
