Wednesday, March 9th, finds the Phoenix Suns facing the Miami Heat for the second and final time this season. Miami won the initial meeting 123-100 on January 8th.
The Suns are completing a back-to-back set having played on Tuesday in a winning 102-99 effort versus the Magic while the Heat last played Monday defeating the Rockets 123-106.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Suns winning both contests. The Suns hold the all-time record with 36 wins in 66 matches versus the Heat.
Phoenix Suns
Monday wasn’t the typical Suns’ victory as they had to claw and fight to beat the team with the worst record in the league. Albeit they’re playing without their top two offensive talents as well as Cam Johnson who is out nursing a quad contusion.
But, like they’ve done all season, they played to their identity with everyone completing their role, and per usual someone stepped up to push them over the top.
This time it was Landry Shamet’s 3-pointers and Deandre Ayton’s defense that got the job done in clutch time as the Suns pulled off the three-point edge to win the match and push them to 51 wins.
Armed with an eight-game pad over the Grizzlies and nine versus the Warriors they can afford to not take risks down the stretch. The closest Eastern team to them is the Heat who are 8.5 games back which means the Suns should have home court throughout the postseason.
With only 17 games remaining on their schedule they can afford to be overly cautious now with any injuries. Regardless of whether Devin Booker had any symptoms from contracting COVID doesn’t matter.
Phoenix is in a position to give him a few extra days off because of their lead, something any of the top teams would love to have the option to do. Likewise, they can give Cam Johnson as long as he needs to get that quad fully healed.
That said Booker is listed as probable for Wednesday perhaps because the Suns want to see how they fare against a possible finals opponent should both teams reach the zenith. Johnson (quad) is questionable.
Chris Paul (thumb), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
It’s not the same situation for the Heat although they do have a three-game edge over both the 76ers and Bucks atop the Eastern playoff ladder.
Last week featured matches against the four teams directly behind them and they came one Tyler Herro turnover away from sweeping the set losing by a point to the Bucks but no doubt feeling confident if Kyle Lowry had played they could turn that loss into a win.
Miami has 16 games remaining on their schedule with six against teams seeded sixth and higher. Of the other 10 contests, they play all four teams seeded seventh through 10th in the East (Raptors, Nets, Hornets, Hawks).
In addition, they’ll play the seventh-seeded Wolves (7th) and five seemingly lottery-bound squads (PIstons, Thunder, Knicks, Kings, Magic). Plus most of the games (11) are on their home court including nine of their next 10 matches.
Miami also got a shot in the arm with the return of Victor Oladipo to the court after close to a year’s absence. His last competitive game was on April 8th of 2021. In 15 minutes he scored 11 points, dished four dimes, grabbed a rebound, dunked the ball, and took a charge.
Pretty impressive work for his first minutes back and while many of their peers tried to bolster their depth at the trade deadline the Heat may have added the most impressive of the lot right from within their own roster.
Caleb Martin (Achilles) is questionable while Markieff Morris (conditioning) remains out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Phoenix is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Miami is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 9 of Phoenix’s last 13 games.
- Miami is 17-3 SU in their last 20 games at home.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Even if Booker returns the Heat have greater depth as well as the rest advantage and home court so I like Miami to win but the question is the spread which started at 7.5 and has grown to 8.0.
If Booker plays the Suns are likely to keep it closer than the spread dictates and since he’s listed as probable I’ll take the Suns and the points.
