For their second game of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers will host the Phoenix Suns. LA lost to the Nuggets on opening night while the Suns battled the Warriors pulling out a win in crunch time.
Both clubs have their eyes fixed on a title run, but the West is deep so every divisional meeting takes on even more credence.

Josh Okogie and Jusuf Nurkic were valuable contributors to the win but the bench remains an issue for the Suns who were only outscored by four points (31-27) but when that unit was on the court the Dubs made runs to pull ahead.

Last season Phoenix finished ranking third offensively (117.3), eighth defensively (110.6), and registered the third-best net rating (+4.4).
In the category of ‘it’s only one game but…’ it’s important to take the results with a grain of salt since the Warriors are a small-ish team and were missing their best defender (Draymond Green).
That said, Frank Vogel should be encouraged by his team holding the offensive juggernauts to 35.6% from the field and 23.3% from deep while outrebounding the Dubs 60 to 49.
If there are lessons to learn from Game 1 of the season, the Suns need to take better care of the ball coughing up 19 turnovers which led to 22 points.

Los Angeles Lakers
For the Lakers to reach their objective of winning an 18th title it’s essential for Anthony Davis to be the key factor. AD obliged initially leading the Lakers with 17 points at the half. Unfortunately, that’s how he finished the game, without scoring another bucket.
Moreover when AD occupied the court with LeBron James sitting the Lakers were minus -19!!
Alternatively, James sure didn’t look like he was in his 21st season registering 21 points, eight rebounds, and five assists but the Lakers plan to manage his health (read load manage his minutes) so he played just 29 minutes.
Moving forward, Davis will need to find a way to be effective throughout the game instead of only impacting segments of it. Additionally, Ham needs to run more plays for Austin Reaves and reduce D’Angelo Russell’s touches.
LA’s x-factor was Taurean Prince who offered 18 points making four of his six 3-pointers and was a menace on defense.
Lakers Stats
Last season LA finished ranking 15th offensively (114.3), and fourth defensively (110.9) with the fifth-best net differential (+3.4).
Don’t read too much into stats from opening night, but in the absence of more games, it’s all we have to go on and offers hints for what Darvin Ham will have his team looking to clean up.
To that end, defense should be Ham’s focus because they allowed the Nuggets to shoot 52.7% from the field and 41.2% from deep. The Lakers won or tied most key categories except 3-pointers made (10 versus 14) which was the difference in the match.
