The Clippers are 1-1 through two matches having lost a nailbiter to the Lakers 101-103 prior to routing the Pelicans 126-103.
Phoenix is one of five teams who remain unbeaten through two ‘seeding’ games including the Raptors, Pacers, Magic, Rockets, and Spurs (who lost Monday in their third game vs. 76ers). They beat the Wizards 125-112 and shocked the Mavericks 117-115.
The Suns began the season looking like they might be a team ready to take a step and then Deandre Ayton was lost for 25 games due to PED use.
A promising 7-4 start to the season gave way to long stretches of losing and the Suns were back to looking like a perennial lottery team.
Fast forward to complaints about their inclusion in Orlando and the Suns are showing many not just what the future holds for this team but what they are right now.
Mikal Bridges is already in my early top-three candidates for Most Improved next season. He joins bright lights Ayton, Devin Booker, and Cameron Johnson (plus Kelly Oubre who is out rehabbing a torn meniscus).
Veteran point guard Ricky Rubio, gritty big man Aron Baynes and Swiss army knife Dario Saric offer maturity and leadership.
They began the bubble restart six games back of the Grizzlies and have cut the margin to 3.5 after two games. Even if they go unbeaten through the eight games it’s still unlikely they can vault past each of the Kings, Pelicans, Blazers, and Spurs to get the shot at the play-in.
However, they can make a statement and warn of what’s to come in 2020-21.
Los Angeles Clippers
Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are healthy but this Clippers crew has entered the bubble with copious challenges. While they lost to the Lakers they took it to the buzzer losing only by two points.
This was without Lou Williams or Montrezl Harrell who represent 37.3 points per game.
That’s what makes this Clippers squad so scary. They are by far the deepest team of the 22 in the bubble and haven’t had time to develop chemistry with many of their new players or even their core, given the load management of Leonard and PG needing time to heal from injuries.
In the rout of the Pelicans, the superstars led the way with Leonard delivering 24 points, five assists, and six rebounds in 26:33 while George dropped 28 points and Reggie Jackson added 15 points.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Suns are 2-9 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
- Home team is 13-5 ATS in the last 18 meetings
- Under is 8-2 in Clippers last 10 vs. NBA Pacific.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Clippers NBA Prediction:
This matinee match features an NBA Finals favorite versus the team most expected to flame out in the bubble.
Instead, the Suns are playing with house money and looking like they have no care in the world other than executing the role of spoiler to perfection. Hoop heads might be in for a surprisingly entertaining contest, especially if the Clippers don’t take the Suns seriously.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Suns plus 9
I still think the Clippers are too focused to let this game get completely out of hand and their defense is much better than the Mavericks. Still, I like the Suns plus the points.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
