The first-round series between the Phoenix Suns and LA Clippers continues with Game 4 on Saturday, April 22nd. Phoenix pulled ahead in the series with a 129-124 victory on Thursday in LA.
ATS
At this time, the Suns are 43-40-2 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 20-21-1 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the Clippers are 42-43 against the spread this season. Also, they are 20-22 ATS as the home team
Season Series
The teams split the regular season series with Phoenix taking the initial two contests 112-95 on October 23rd and 111-95 on December 15th while the Clippers won 116-107 on February 16th and 119-114 on April 9th.
Last season, the squads met four times and split the season series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 137 of their 235 matches.
Phoenix Suns
Luck plays a role for every championship team and while the Suns have a long path still to even reach the NBA Finals they were dished some major timely luck on Thursday with Kawhi Leonard being ruled out due to a knee sprain.
That and an overtly friendly whistle on the road that witnessed them take 21 additional free throws (46 to 25). In spite of those massive advantages the Suns barely won the game.
All five starters scored in double-figures with Devin Booker leading the way dropping 45 while Kevin Durant scored 28.
Stats
Phoenix averages 113.6 points per game ranking 17th while shooting 46.7% from the field and 37.4% from the perimeter ranking 23rd and seventh overall.
Defensively opponents score 111.6 points ranking sixth-best. Meanwhile, they limit foes to 46.6% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking sixth and 11th respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Cameron Payne PG (questionable — back)
LA Clippers
If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all — feels like the appropriate tagline for Ty Lue’s season. Just as things looked to be meshing for his squad and Kawhi resembling the dominant force he was in 2019 with the Raptors he suffered a sprained knee.
Already without Paul George, losing Leonard could’ve equated to a Suns blowout but instead, Norman Powell (44 points) and Russell Westbrook (30 points) refused to go down without a fight.
Officials played a role in every Thursday match with the dueling groin shots in Brooklyn, the seeming favoritism of the Warriors at Chase, and the massive discrepancy in free throws for the Suns.
The latter annoyed Clipper Nation particularly as the refs allowed Phoenix some calls that shouldn’t be occurring on their home court let alone on the road and ignored obvious calls that should’ve been penalized.
I have no horse in this race but here’s a great video showing how egregious the officials were on Thursday.
Stats
Presently, LA ranks 18th for scoring averaging 113.6 points per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 38.1% from the perimeter ranking 13th and third respectively.
Opponents average 113.1 points per game ranking 12th lowest overall while allowing opponents to shoot 47.4% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 16th and 19th respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the LA Clippers injury report… (note: the Clippers played Saturday so haven’t updated the injury report yet)
- Kawhi Leonard, PF (questionable—knee sprain)
- Paul George SF (OUT indefinitely — knee)

Free Phoenix Suns vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
The big question entering Saturday is whether Kawhi will play and if he does whether the knee sprain will impact his mobility; although using him as a decoy and playmaker could be an option.
It might be too little too late regardless and unfortunately, the officials have become a talking point for several series including this one. Because it’s a must-win for LA I’ll take the points and cross my fingers Kawhi suits up.
