Wednesday, March 16th finds the Phoenix Suns facing the Houston Rockets for the fourth and final time this season. Phoenix has won all three prior matches including November 4th (123-111), November 14th (115-89), and February 16th (124-121).
Both squads last played the Pelicans with the Suns playing the front side of a back-to-back set on Tuesday and winning 131-115 while the Rockets played New Orleans on Sunday losing 105-130.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Suns sweeping the regular-season series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Rockets in 114 of their 222 matches
Phoenix Suns
The Suns continue to win in spite of missing their captain Chris Paul and put up some explosive offensive performances in their last two games. They bounced back from the loss to the Raptors with a huge 140-111 defeat of the Lakers posting 48 points in the opening quarter.
In the win versus the Pelicans, they dropped 131 points with six Suns scoring in double-figures led by Devin Booker who scored 27 points plus eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Mikal Bridges offered 20 points while JaVale McGee dropped 19 points in a reserve role. The trio of Deandre Ayton (18), Cameron Payne (14), and Torrey Craig (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
The Suns shot a robust 52.9 percent from the perimeter connecting on 18 of their 34 attempts. In an oddity, the Pelcians got nine more free throws (24 to 15) but held only a two-point edge because the Suns drained all 15 of their attempts whereas the Pels missed seven.
Phoenix converted the Pels’ 17 turnovers into 33 points and although they lost the battle of paint scoring and rebounding they were so efficient it didn’t matter.
Cameron Johnson (quad) is questionable for Wednesday. Chris Paul (thumb), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are out indefinitely.
Houston Rockets
The Rockets reside in one of the coveted bottom three seeds which would improve their odds of winning the NBA Draft lottery. Although the Magic have more losses they also have an additional win because they’ve played more games.
That means the Rockets currently have the worst record and with only 14 games remaining appear to have cemented that bottom three seed.
Six of their remaining games are against teams seeded eighth or higher while the other eight opponents feature two games each against the Blazers and Kings plus matches versus the Spurs, Pacers, Wizards, and Hawks.
Dennis Schroder (illness) was upgraded to probable while Eric Gordon (knee) is questionable for Wednesday. Usman Garuba (wrist) is out indefinitely. John Wall remains on the shelf as the Rockets failed to find a trade partner and are in a stalemate regarding a buy-out given his massive salary.
