Sunday, January 16th, finds the Phoenix Suns facing the Detroit Pistons for the second and final time this season. Phoenix won the initial meeting 114-103 on December 2nd.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Suns defeating the Pacers 112-94 while the Pistons continued their dominance of the Raptors winning 103-87 for their 10th win of the season.
Last season, the teams played twice each winning on their home court. The Pistons hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 71 of the 149 matches versus the Suns.
Phoenix Suns
To finish the first half of the season the Suns are 32-9 with the best record in the association. They padded that total via the win versus the Pacers as Devin Booker delivered a 35 point effort. Deandre Ayton produced a double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds.
Chris Paul just missed out on a double-double with 12 points and nine assists plus three rebounds, two steals, and a block. Cameron Payne chipped in 11 points as the only other double-figure scorer.

The Suns have seven players who average 10 or more points although Kaminsky is in that group but hasn’t played in a while. In addition, JaVale McGee and Jae Crowder average just under 10 points with 9.9 and 9.3 respectively. It reflects the balanced scoring of this squad.
Cameron Johnson (ankle) and Abdel Nader (conditioning) are questionable for Sunday while Dario Saric (knee) and Frank Kaminsky (knee) remain out indefinitely.
Detroit Pistons
Dwane Casey’s mastery over his former team continued as the Pistons won their fifth straight against Toronto and are 8-3 since he became the coach in Detroit. It wasn’t that surprising they beat Toronto given their recent uptick in success.
With only 10 wins on the season, half of those came since the calendar switched to 2022 with the Pistons 5-3 in this period including quality wins versus the Bucks and Jazz. On Friday, they jumped on the Raptors from the tip and were extremely physical which was punctuated early by Khem Birch’s nose being broken.
In another play, a Piston pushed Chris Boucher in the back shoving him face-first into another Detroit player. Although the refs reviewed it forever inexplicably no flagrant was called.
The officiating throughout this match favored Detroit with rookie Scottie Barnes picking up a phantom foul when Saddiq Bey tripped over his own feet yet even though the coach’s challenge confirmed that the call stood.
In the win, Canadian Trey Lyles led the way with 21 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Cade Cunningham won the rookie battle with 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Hamidou Diallo also scored 18 points with six rebounds.
Saddiq Bey and Josh Jackson scored 15 and 13 respectively as the other double-figure contributors.
Frank Jackson (conditioning) is questionable while Jeremy Grant (thumb), Isaiah Livers (foot), and Kelly Olynyk (knee) are out indefinitely.

Phoenix Suns vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Analysis:
Although the Pistons have played better of late there is no way they get the same whistle against the Suns that they got versus the Raptors. While it’s not inconceivable Phoenix could cover the spread I like the Pistons to keep it closer than 11.5 but the Suns to win.
