Game 5 of the semi-finals between the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets finds the teams returning to Ball Arena and tipping off on Tuesday, May 9th.
The Suns knotted up the series in arguably the most entertaining match of the playoffs so far with a 129-124 victory on Sunday.
At this time, the Suns are 45-43-2 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 21-23-1 ATS as the away team. At this time, the Nuggets are 49-40-1 against the spread this season. Also, they are 29-16-1 ATS as the home team
The teams split the season series with Denver winning on December 25th in overtime (128-125), and January 11th (126-97), while the Suns won on March 31st (100-93) and April 6th (119-115).
This is the fifth time the clubs are facing each other in the postseason with Phoenix holding the 3-1 advantage including the most recent meeting in 2021 when the Nuggets were limited without Murray or Porter Jr.
Monty Williams has acquiesced to going deeper into his bench and on Sunday that paid dividends as Landry Shamet scored 19 points hitting five of his eight 3-pointers.
The Suns’ reserves scored 40 points a far cry from the four points they delivered in Game 2 or the 16 points they averaged through the initial three contests.
Devin Booker and Kevin Durant continued to impress each delivering double-doubles featuring 36 points with Booker adding 12 assists, and six rebounds while KD filled up the stat sheet with 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a block.
The only blip in their games was each coughed up the ball five times. Booker was particularly special having missed just nine shots in his 43 attempts this weekend.
Phoenix averages 113.6 points per game ranking 17th while shooting 46.7% from the field and 37.4% from the perimeter ranking 23rd and seventh overall.
Defensively opponents score 111.6 points ranking sixth-best. Meanwhile, they limit foes to 46.6% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking sixth and 11th respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Chris Paul PG (OUT indefinitely— groin)
The flight back to Denver will be a tough one given Nikola Jokic delivered a massive double-double of 53 points and 11 assists plus four rebounds and a block but the Nuggets still lost.
Jamal Murray did his part pitching in 28 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and a steal with no turnovers. The other three starters all scored in double-digits although Michael Porter Jr. had a rough shooting night (4 of 13).
Yet, the biggest difference in the match was the Nuggets reserves who were outscored 40 to 11 points by the Suns bench.
While the superstars all delivered the main takeaway involved Suns owner Mat Ishbia. With Okogie on the ground, Jokic tried to grab the ball and inbound quickly. As fortune would have it the ball landed in Ishbia’s hands who refused to give it up.
Ishbia put his hands on Jokic’s hip who responded by using his forearm to push him off as the owner channeled his best Marcus Smart flop and what ensued was a Jokic technical foul followed up with a $25k fine on Monday.
Interestingly, as of this posting the instigator (Ishbia) wasn’t fined or penalized which sets a dangerous precedent and no doubt will rear its head in the future as fans could emulate the owner and cite double standards if they’re penalized.

On the positive side, Denver possesses one of the two best offenses in the league highlighted by scoring 115.8 points per game ranking 12th. Denver is shooting the best field goal percentage of 50.4% as well as the fourth-best perimeter efficiency of 37.9%.
Denver allows opponents to score 112.5 points per game which ranks eighth while limiting foes to 47.8% from the field and 34.4% from deep ranking 20th and third respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Collin Gillespie PG (OUT—leg fracture)

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction:
In the last three games officials have favored the Suns’ aggressive defense while also rewarding their offensive-instigated bumps but not the less significant touch fouls by Denver.
Michael Malone felt Denver got away from their defensive intensity so given the above expect the Nuggets to bring a much more physically defensive effort in Game 5.
The superstars have delivered through four games but even with Williams utilizing his reserves more there has to be concern over Durant and Booker’s minutes. Through nine playoff games, they’re averaging 42.9 and 42.8 minutes per game respectively.
In contrast, Jokic (37.6) and Murray (38.6) are averaging between four and three minutes less although both logged 40 minutes in two and three games of this series.
With this now a best-of-three here’s hoping the officials just let the teams play with an equal whistle. If they do I still believe the Nuggets have greater constancy in their systems and are the much deeper squad so that should equate to them winning the series.
