Game 2 of the semi-finals between the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets tips off on Monday, May 1st. Denver took the initial meeting via a rout of the Suns winning 125-107.
While it was just the opening match of the series and adjustments will be made the lack of depth for the Suns and a below average defense got exposed by the Nuggets.
ATS
At this time, the Suns are 44-42-2 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 21-22-1 ATS as the away team. At this time, the Nuggets are 48-39-1 against the spread this season. Also, they are 28-16-1 ATS as the home team
Season Series
The teams split the season series with Denver winning on December 25th in overtime (128-125), and January 11th (126-97), while the Suns won on March 31st (100-93) and April 6th (119-115).
This is the fifth time the clubs are facing each other in the postseason with Phoenix holding the 3-1 advantage including the most recent meeting in 2021 when the Nuggets were limited without Murray or Porter Jr.
Phoenix Suns
If you read the Game 1 preview it noted the mid-range prowess of Phoenix and their two superstars. Both were on full display in Game 1 as Kevin Durant (29 points, 14 rebounds, assist, steal, 3 blocks) and Devin Booker (27 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, steal, 2 blocks) led the way.
Also noted were their weaknesses such as lack of depth, few perimeter shooters or two-way players, plus the heavy minutes KD and Booker are amassing.
All of these became factors in Game 1 and even after Monty Williams makes adjustments it’s hard to imagine they won’t become even more concerning as the series progresses.
In round 1 the Suns averaged 122 points per game but the 107 they scored in Game 1 doesn’t accurately reflect the situation as the starters left the court with 5:09 remaining in the match trailing 99-118.
This is with Booker and KD playing 40 and 36 minutes respectively so looking forward if Phoenix is to get into this series it’s hard to fathom their minutes not increasing.
Stats
Phoenix averages 113.6 points per game ranking 17th while shooting 46.7% from the field and 37.4% from the perimeter ranking 23rd and seventh overall.
Defensively opponents score 111.6 points ranking sixth-best. Meanwhile, they limit foes to 46.6% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking sixth and 11th respectively.

Denver Nuggets
Depth was on full display in Game 1 as the Nuggets immediately sent a message to the Suns that they can’t simply try to shut down Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic and that will lead to an advantage.
Murray (34 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals, 6 long balls) and Jokic (24 points, 19 rebounds, 5 assists) combined for 58 points, 24 rebounds, and 14 assists.
Comparatively, the Suns’ star duo combined for 56 points, 18 rebounds, and 9 assists, and this with each playing three extra minutes than their counterparts.
As a team, the Nuggets outrebounded the Suns 49-38 and 16 to 8 on the offensive glass, were aggressive defensively (14 to 4 in steals), and were plus 11 on points scored off turnovers with all five starters scoring in double-figures plus Bruce Brown.
Stats
On the positive side, Denver possesses one of the two best offenses in the league highlighted by scoring 115.8 points per game ranking 12th. Denver is shooting the best field goal percentage of 50.4% as well as the fourth-best perimeter efficiency of 37.9%.
Denver allows opponents to score 112.5 points per game which ranks eighth while limiting foes to 47.8% from the field and 34.4% from deep ranking 20th and third respectively.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction:
Clearly, Williams will make adjustments after Game 1, but beyond having KD and Booker play longer plus be more involved defensively his options are limited.
Deandre Ayton bragged about his motor, calling himself DominAyton but 14 points and 7 rebounds aren’t enough from the center. Nor is 11 points and five assists (1 of 5 from deep) from Chris Paul. And, that’s their four best players.
Sure, they can play better but who can counter the production of Michael Porter Jr., Bruce Brown, KCP, or Aaron Gordon on the Suns?
It’s one thing if Williams comes up with a scheme to limit Jokic (who is capable of more but conceded to Murray who was hot) but how he’ll counter with everyone else is the issue.
Expected changes are more zone defense, increased 3-point attempts (Denver outscored Phoenix 48-21 on made 3-pointers), and additional defensive tweaks.
Ultimately, this series gets harder for Phoenix the longer it goes so I’m sticking with my preseason pick to win the West. Hence I’m taking Denver to go up 2-0 as they put the Suns in a situation where they’ll have to win four of five to advance.
