Sunday, May 8th, the top-ranked Phoenix Suns and fourth place Dallas Mavericks play Game 4 of their Western Conference semi-finals. Phoenix leads the series 2-1 after Dallas registered their first win in Game 3.
Both teams won their first-round series 4-2 with the Mavericks defeating the Utah Jazz and the Phoenix Suns beating the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Suns swept the Mavericks in the 2021-22 season series 3-0 with victories on November 17th (105-98), 19th (112-104), and January 20th (109-101). The Suns hold the all-time advantage having won 94 times of the club’s 168 regular-season meetings versus the Mavericks.
This is the third time the clubs are playing in the postseason with each team having won a prior series. The Suns won the 2005 semi-finals 4-2 while the Mavericks won the 2006 Conference finals 4-2.
Phoenix Suns
It was Chris Paul’s 37th birthday but the veteran guard didn’t have much to celebrate on the court as he delivered arguably his worst game of the postseason. By the half of Game 3, he already had seven turnovers.
Paul finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while Devin Booker got extra attention scoring only 18 points on 6 of 13 from the field.
While the Suns have feasted in every playoff game shooting 50 percent or better this loss was the first time they shot below that average (45%).
Jae Crowder was the top scorer for Phoenix with 19 points while Deandre Ayton managed a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds and Mikal Bridges chipped in 12 as the other double-figure scorer.
One play that angered the Suns occurred at 10:20 of the third quarter when Dwight Powell knocked the ball out of Booker’s hands and it sailed out of bounds. However, the refs gave the ball to Dallas who quickly inbounded leading to a Dorian Finney-Smith 3-pointer.
Phoenix had not got into their defensive position so it was essentially a wide-open look for DFS.
Torrey Craig (elbow) is listed as day-to-day while Dario Sarick (knee) is out for the season.
Dallas Mavericks
In the opening round, Jalen Brunson feasted posting 27.8 points and 4.2 assists while shooting 48% from the field and 36% from deep. Yet, he’d struggled to start this series with his averages dropping to 11 points, 2.5 assists on 32% from the field, and 25 percent from deep.
Back in Dallas, he rediscovered his scoring touch with Jason Kidd putting the ball in his hands more and it resulted in his best game of the semi-finals series collecting 14 points just in the first half and finishing with 28 points on 10 of 21 although he still struggled from deep (1-5).
Brunson added four rebounds, five assists, and a steal. Luka Doncic put up another strong stat line with a double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds along with nine assists.
After being targeted on the defensive end in Game 2, Doncic was more invested defensively and despite foul trouble with his teammates carrying more of the scoring and playmaking, it appeared he had more energy to invest on the defensive end.
Reggie Bullock (15), Maxi Kleber (14), and Dorian Finney-Smith (14) were the other double-figure contributors.
Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) is out indefinitely.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
Dallas ended their 11 game losing streak to Phoenix but can’t afford to get too comfortable as the Suns lost consecutive games only four times the entire season and so far, not at all in the postseason.
Some keys to watch for in Game 4 will be how the Suns defend the paint after allowing Dallas to outscore them 50-32 and they’ll need to take better care of the ball as their 17 turnovers led to 22 Mavericks points.
Meanwhile, Dallas needs to do a better job on the glass losing the rebounding battle 45 to 36 and Brunson needs to remain aggressive attacking the rim.
