The top-ranked Phoenix Suns and fourth place Dallas Mavericks shift venues to play two matches at American Airlines Center with Game 3 et for Friday, May 6th. Phoenix leads the series 2-0.
Both teams won their first-round series 4-2 with the Mavericks defeating the Utah Jazz and the Phoenix Suns beating the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Suns swept the Mavericks in the 2021-22 season series 3-0 with victories on November 17th (105-98), 19th (112-104), and January 20th (109-101).
Notably, Luka Doncic only played in one of the three matches between the teams while Deandre Ayton missed one of the contests.
The Suns hold the all-time advantage having won 94 times of the club’s 168 regular-season meetings versus the Mavericks.
This is the third time the clubs are playing in the postseason with each team having won a prior series. The Suns won the 2005 semi-finals 4-2 while the Mavericks won the 2006 Conference finals 4-2.
Phoenix Suns
Chris Paul didn’t suddenly become a clutch-time killer. He’s been the most lethal player in those precious final five minutes of games for the past four seasons.
It’s almost systematic at this point. In virtually every game the Point God begins the game easing into his role getting everyone else touches and feeling confident on offense.
But the fourth quarter and clutch time belong to the Point God as he asserts his will on the game increasing his shot attempts and taking over games.
Something he’s highly effective at given the Suns possesses a 52-0 record when leading after three quarters this season.
In Game 2, Phoenix was up by six when he checked into the game at the start of the fourth and by 7:04 the Suns were up 15 with Paul having scored or assisted on the team’s initial 19 points of the frame.
To add insult to injury CP3 isolated specifically on Luka Doncic turning him inside and out as he methodically built his team’s lead. Paul finished with 28 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and a steal.
Devin Booker was the high scorer with 30 points punctuated by three consecutive 3-pointers in that final quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Suns’ bigs got into foul trouble but it didn’t matter whether Deandre Ayton, JaVale McGee, or Bismack Biyombo were on the floor, at least offensively, as each got their way inside with Dallas not having the size to stop them.
Dallas Mavericks
While losing 11 consecutive times to the Suns isn’t a confidence builder at least being back home might help get Mavericks not named Doncic back on track.
Through two games Doncic has scored 80 points while the rest of the starters have scored 70. The Suns have elected to guard the Mavs superstar with single coverage almost luring him into taking over games.
At least when both Paul and Booker sought him out on the defensive end in the fourth quarter it sure seemed like they have a method in mind — wear out Doncic through three quarters and then attack him forcing him to defend.
Perhaps, Doncic could learn from CP3 and spend more time off the ball or instigating his teammate’s production so he can have something in the tank to finish the game.
In Game 2, aside from Doncic’s 35 points only Reggie Bullock (16 points) and Spencer Dinwiddie (11) scored in double-figures.
Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) is out indefinitely.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
While the Mavericks have held the Suns in check for the most part on transition they need to make tweaks to stop Phoenix in the paint or on the perimeter. In Game 2, they feasted in both areas outscoring Dallas 50-32 in the paint while allowing them to shoot 52% from deep.
Similarly, there’s been a lack of ball or player movement which might explain why Doncic’s teammates have been cold.
It’s already a must-win scenario for the Mavs who need to win four of the next five to move on.
