Thursday, February 3rd, finds the Phoenix Suns facing the Atlanta Hawks for the second and final time this season. In the initial meeting on November 6th, the Suns won the match 121-117.
After winning seven games in a row the Hawks streak came to an end on Monday with a 100-106 loss to the Raptors albeit Trae Young was out. In contrast, the Suns just keep rolling having extended their win streak to 11 games in a row with the 121-111 victory versus the Nets on Tuesday.
Last season, the teams played twice with each team winning on their home court. The Suns have won 75 of the 133 matches played versus the Hawks all-time.
Phoenix Suns
As the top team in the NBA, the Suns are winning via consistency which is reflected in them being the only club to have two double-digit winning streaks.
Given the truncated offseason it’s not surprising even the elite teams have each gone through small losing streaks. Currenlty the Jazz and Nets are having the biggest issues on both on five-game losing streaks.
Phoenix is the one team in this group that hasn’t fallen victim to suffering losses tied to injuries or a busy schedule. Part of that is tied to their depth but more accurately it likely speaks to their identity and the culture this franchise has built.
Factor in how much Chris Paul is doing to keep everyone focused. While Devin Booker has been balling and is the team’s primary scoring option it’s CP3 who truly is the captain of the Suns and is for his efforts has to be considered the MVP conversation.
His stats aren’t as sexy and he’s not necessarily serving up the highlights showing on all the media recaps but is there anyone other than Nikola Jokic or Joel Embiid impacting winning more than Paul?
At 36 the Point God is averaging 14.1 points, leading the league in assists (10.4), 4.5 rebounds, and still grabbing 1.9 steals per match. Many are focused on how 37-year-old LeBron James is dominating but consider the fact his Lakers are 19-17 in games he’s played.
Paul may not have comparable stats to the King but he sure is impacting winning.
Jae Crowder (wrist) and Deandre Ayton (ankle) returned to the lineup on Tuesday and are probable for Thursday. Abdel Nader (conditioning) is questionable, Landry Shamet (ankle) was downgraded to out.
Cameron Payne (wrist), Dario Saric (knee) and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are out indefinitely.
Atlanta Hawks
After looking like they’d turned a corner the Hawks came back down to earth a bit with the loss to the Raptors. Certainly not having Trae Young made a major impact specifically on the offensive end.
However, without Young, the Hawks are better defensively but weren’t able to control the Raptors who were severely fatigued having played a triple-overtime match just two days prior and still only used mostly their starters.
That doesn’t mean this Hawks team won’t get right back into the win column but facing the best team in the league and the second-ranked defense will provide a true litmus test for the youngsters.
DeAndre Hunter (ankle) is probable while Trae Young (hip) is questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The Hawks are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games.
- Phoenix is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games on the road.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Atlanta’s last 5 games.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
This is an intriguing match, particularly when you consider each of these clubs made deep playoff runs in 2021. Both teams are young and have quality vets but how they approached this season and are performing is very telling.
While the Hawks seemed to expect to win without providing the effort (at least on one end of the floor) the Suns approach every game with the same level of focus and attention.
Phoenix is due for a loss but I’m sticking with them because I trust their process, system, and roster more than I do the Hawks.
