The Suns began their post-All Star Break tank job with a quality loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kevin Love secured a double-double and Cedi Osman led the victors with 19 points and chipped in five rebounds and assists.
Devin Booker scored a game-high 30 and Kelly Oubre added 23. TJ Warren did not play due to an ankle injury and Tyler Johnson did, coming back from an injury that kept him out prior to the break to score five points with five assists and eight rebounds.
As far as Draft Lottery positioning goes, 49 losses are great and lead the NBA but the Knicks’ 11 wins equal Phoenix’s. The Suns have some work to do to get clear of New York. Not that it really matters, each of the three worst teams will have equal odds of landing the first overall pick and the Suns will certainly get there.
It’s really just a matter of how many games Phoenix can lose. Had the Suns not won four in a row in the middle of the season, we’d be talking about whether this team can set the NBA record for losses. Instead, a high-60s mark feels about right.
Atlanta was competing with the tankers for a while but Trae Young continues to improve; DeAndre Bembry and Kevin Huerter have developed on the wing; and Atlanta has the best record, by far, of any last-place team in the Eastern Conference.
Huerter is the really interesting young piece Atlanta has. A pick in the middle of the first round a year ago out of Maryland, Huerter shoots 39 percent from three and has been recording about two assists for every turnover for an extended period of time now.
He has to work on his scoring when it isn’t a catch-and-shoot or quick three off the dribble but there is a lot to like about Atlanta’s Red Mamba.
Of course, John Collins continues to develop and looks like he’s ready to take the leap from good player to All-Star next season. Trae Young has the fourth-most assists in the NBA and looks like he’s only going to get better following a rookie season that has been trying but given him every opportunity to learn and improve.
With Young, Collins and Huerter on team-friendly rookie deals and Carmelo Anthony and Jeremy Lin’s contracts off the books next season, Atlanta is well-positioned. Kent Bazemore and Miles Plumlee will be over $30 million of expiring deals in another year.
With draft picks coming in and a competent young coaching staff and front office, the Hawks’ future looks bright.
