Monday, October 31st the Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards playing the first of four scheduled contests this season.
The Wizards play the front side of a back-to-back set versus the Celtics on Sunday while the 76ers last played Saturday defeating the Bulls. This is also the front side of a home and home series between the clubs with the teams playing in Philly on Wednesday.
All-time the 76ers have the advantage of winning 187 of 312 matches with Philly. Last season met three times with the Wizards winning two of the three contests.
Philadelphia 76ers
With consecutive victories it’s possible the 76ers have turned a corner although you should still exercise caution until there’s a larger sample.
In the second match in Toronto, the Raptors found out Joel Embiid was out with little time to prepare. It ended up being a bit of a trap game because the natural tendency for a team that knows the opponent’s best player is out is to relax.
Against the Bulls, Embiid returned and the 76ers got out to a strong start. In both games the Sixers allowed Toronto and Chicago back in the games after holding double-digit leads.
The concern is they still don’t look great on either side of the floor. Personally, I’m trying to figure out what it is about James Harden that allows him to get away with so much with the refs.
We’ve always known he hunts fouls on offense even spending time in the offseason to figure out ways he can bait players and the refs into calls.
Now he’s doing it on defense… he pushes players in the back as they go up for a lay-in or dunk or elbows them in the ribs while they are rebounding.
Just for fun isolate on him in a game and don’t be surprised if you catch him doing that 10 plus times a game.
His teammates have upped their acting and flop games too. Georges Niang flopped on a block/charge call in Chicago and Embiid flailed like he’d been hit by someone his size instead of a player at least 50 pounds lighter than him.
Philly players are the worst at baiting refs and also might be the team who complains the most when they’re called for fouls (although the Suns are a close call to win that whining award).
Washington Wizards
With Bradley Beal healthy and clicking with Kristaps Porzingis the Wizards have gotten out to a decent start to the season. Washington has a recent history of strong starts prior to fading so what they do as the season progresses will be telling.
With their victories coming against the Pistons, Pacers (they also lost a game to Indy) and Bulls it’s hard to know precisely how good this iteration of the Wizards are.
The game Sunday should offer greater insight as Washington faces a bonafide title contender in the Celtics. If the Wiz lose that game it would be reasonable to move them into the play-in tier as they’d have lost to both the Cavs and Celts who are the two best teams they’ve faced.
As for their strategy Wes Unseld has his club playing well on defense but struggling offensively. Entering Sunday they ranked seventh on defense and 21st on offense. The latter impacted by their early ease of schedule.
Corey Kispert (ankle) is expected to miss three to four weeks while Delon Wright (hamstring) will miss between six and eight weeks.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
With Washington playing the night prior and the Sixers seemingly righting the ship with consecutive victories Philly should have the edge.
Prior to season start this would be a no-brainer 76ers pick but a lack of consistency and their propensity to cough up large leads going extended stretches with the offense stalling particularly in the second half is troublesome.
Fortunately, the Toronto baseball set led to successful adjustments partly because of circumstance and arguably because Embiid sat the second game which forced Rivers to utilize other personnel.
Tyrese Maxey’s break out pinpointed the need to increase pace or at least offer some variance instead of playing half court iso ball and to get the youngster more touches.
Rivers also tapped Matisse Thybulle who had been chained to the bench and increased De’Anthony Melton’s minutes — both of whom bolster the defense with a specific emphasis on transition D which was non-existent prior to these past two games.
I’m not suggesting the players won’t revert back since Harden is the primary ball handler. However, at least in this match I’m betting they’ll stick with the strategy that resulted in their first consecutive wins this season.
