Thursday, April 7th the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors meet for the fourth and final time this season. Toronto leads the season series 2-1 having won on November 11th (115-109) and March 20th (93-88) while the 76ers took the December 28th match (114-109).
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the 76ers defeating the Pacers 131-122 while the Raptors ended another Atlanta Hawks winning streak with a 118-108 victory.
This could very well be a preview of the four-five seeds first-round series as the teams enter this match in those positions.
Last season, the squads played three times with the 76ers taking two of the three contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 60 of their 102 matches.
Philadelphia 76ers
Joel Embiid continues to impress this season and enters this match leading the league in scoring with a 0.1 point per game edge over LeBron James who will need to play two of the final three Lakers games just to qualify to win the scoring title.
He’s also very much in a three-horse race between himself, Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo for the Most Valuable Player award. Of the three Embiid has been the most vocal about wanting to win MVP and the scoring title since Shaq was the last big man to do it.
Philly has three games remaining with this match the most difficult of that trio since they’ll finish the season at home hosting the Pacers and Pistons in a back-to-back set this weekend.
Philly has the same record as the Bucks and are a half-game back of the Celtics. In terms of tiebreakers, Milwaukee won the season series and they’ve tied the Celtics but Boston would also win the tiebreak because their record against teams in the Atlantic Division is better.
In an interesting turn of events, Matisse Thybulle is out on Thursday due to eligibility which we can easily decipher means he hasn’t been vaccinated.
What makes this intriguing is these teams could face each other in the first round and if Thybulle hasn’t been fully vaccinated he won’t be able to play in Toronto.
Toronto Raptors
With the Raptors’ victory and Cavaliers’ loss on Tuesday Toronto cemented their playoff berth and also jumped up to the fifth seed when the Bulls lost. That half-game grew to a full game lead when Chicago lost again on Wednesday.
They have three games remaining including this final back-to-back set hosting the 76ers tonight, then the Rockets on Friday, and will close the regular season in Orlando on Sunday.
Toronto can finish fourth, fifth, or sixth. They’re up 1.5 games on Chicago and trail Milwaukee and Philly. They swept the Bucks but would lose the tiebreak because Milwaukee won their division but would win the 76ers tiebreak because they have a better divisional record.
Still, it’s not likely they finish fourth as Philly isn’t likely to finish 0-3.
OG Anunoby (thigh) and Yuta Watanabe (quad) are both questionable for Thursday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Philadelphia is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.

- The total has gone UNDER in 13 of Toronto’s last 19 games.
- The 76ers are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games as a road underdog.
- The Raptors are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a favorite.
Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
We’ll get an idea of what the Raptors’ desires are in terms of who they prefer to face by who plays tonight. Nick Nurse said he’ll rest his core and Fred VanVleet is the guy who needs it most.
Still, OG Anunoby may play tonight, and if VanVleet does too it sort of tips the hat they want to play Philly (and they should of their options). VanVleet would still get some quality time off if he sits after this game since the playoffs don’t start until April 16th.
Neither Doc Rivers or Nurse will want to tip their hand for play schemes in case they do meet in round one, but simultaneously will want the win for the confidence factor.
Preseason Toronto was cited as a “possible” play-in option and has blasted through that prediction and given the mindset of Nurse I think he’ll have his team fired up to win this game to gain the psychological edge.
