The Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors meet on Wednesday, October 26th to play for the first of two consecutive games in Toronto. It’s their first meeting since the teams battled in the first round of the 2022 playoffs.
Both teams played on Monday as Philly finally broke through to collect their first win of the season beating the Pacers (120-106) while the Raptors defeated the Heat (98-90) wrapping up their baseball series in Miami.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Raptors winning three of the four contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having won 61 matches of the 103 played versus Philly.
Philadelphia 76ers
In the vein of its only one week BUT… it’s hard to ignore the fact something is amiss in Philly. Part of the reason is tied to Joel Embiid fighting through plantar fasciitis.
For those unfamiliar that injury feels like knives being inserted in your foot standing still so imagine the pain of running. That’s clearly impacted his inability to stay in condition as the best way to heal is rest.
Another observation is it feels like Embiid, Harden and others felt by adding PJ Tucker they’d immediately be a top-ranked defense (heck – I thought that too). The problem is Tucker can’t defend five players at once.
Harden’s defense will always be problematic and Embiid’s injury is impacting his ability to slide.
Entering Monday they ranked 24th in the three key categories (offense, defense, net rating) but improved to 13th, 22nd, and 17th with the victory against the Pacers.
More concerning is the fact Philly ranks 30th in rebounding (total boards and offensive boards).
Toronto Raptors
The Raptors dealt with injuries for the majority of last season and while they began the season with most of their roster healthy the absence of two key bench players (Chris Boucher, Otto Porter Jr.) was felt.
On Monday, Scottie Barnes was sidelined but Boucher made his season debut and had an immediate impact.
Boucher and Precious Achiuwa have amazing chemistry and CB’s return incidentally coincided with the latter grabbing a career-high 22 rebounds.

- the Raptors’ defense is lethal when they up their intensity – they held Miami to 14 points in the fourth quarter
- Pascal Siakam has taken another step (averaging 26.5 points, 10 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.5 steals) and opponents have noticed. Erik Spoelstra was sending double and triple teams at him and Siakam responded by hitting the open man.
- Toronto won EVERY key category except free throw attempts (fast break scoring was 27 to 13)
- With Boucher back, it punctuated how much better the Raptors will be when fully healthy
- Until then, expect Nurse to play Siakam and VanVleet extended minutes again.

It’s the Raptors who shine in fourth quarters holding opponents to the fewest points and possessing a net rating of +28.7 almost 20 points more than the Sixers (8.9) so regardless of whether the Raptors or 76ers are favored by 1 or 1.5 take the Raptors.
