Saturday, January 21st, the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors meet for the second of four scheduled matches this season. Boston won the initial December 5th match 116-110 and will host a baseball set on April 5th and 7th.
Both teams last played on Thursday with the Raptors coughing up an 18-point lead losing 126-128 to the Wolves while the Celtics required overtime to defeat the Warriors 121-118.
Last season, the squads played four times with teams splitting the series each winning twice. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 63 of their 105 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Friday evening, January 20th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Saturday, January 21st.
Boston Celtics
The Warriors adjusted their starting lineup to bring in more firepower against the offensively gifted Celtics and the move almost paid dividends but the Bean Town crew locked in to capture the overtime victory.
Late in the match when the Warriors battled to force overtime the Celtics were making uncharacteristic errors and turnovers which is likely more a sign of how much they want to beat the Dubs rather than Boston’s weaknesses.
Tatum banged up his wrist in the match on a night when he pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds registering a double-double that included 34 points.
All five starters scored in double-figures plus Malcolm Brogdon who along with Al Horford proved to be the x-factors for Boston.
Stats
Boston claims the second-best point production averaging 118.8 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.6% from the field and 37.0% from the perimeter ranking 12th and eighth respectively.
Slowly but surely, the Celtics’ defensive stats are improving as well. Opponents average 112.4 points per game which ranked 11th. Celtics opponents are limited to 46.8 percent from the field and 35.6% from the perimeter which ranks 12th and 13th respectively.
Jayson Tatum (wrist) is out Saturday. Danilo Gallinari (ACL repair) is out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
For every positive step the Raptors take, they follow it up with two negative ones. In their last match, Toronto held an 18-point lead against a Wolves squad who played the night prior and didn’t get back to Minny until 4 AM.
Plus the Wolves were missing Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert but the Raptors found a way to implode and let the Wolves back in the game and ultimately capture the win.
While I’ve been hard on Fred VanVleet in recent posts, on this night it was Pascal Siakam who was responsible for hijacking the offense that worked through three quarters. Siakam repeatedly drove into two or three Wolves forcing shots up hoping for a whistle that simply wasn’t coming.
Stats
On offense, the Raptors score 112.5 points per game ranking 22nd while shooting 44.9% from the field to rank 29th and 33.2% from deep ranking 28th overall.
Defensively, the Raptors allow 112.5 opponent points per game ranking 12th while shooting 48.8% from the field ranking 27th, and 37.0% ranked 26th.
Dalano Banton (hip) is questionable for Saturday. Otto Porter Jr. had season-ending toe surgery. Christian Koloko, Ron Harper Jr., and Jeff Dowtin Jr., are on G League assignment.

Free Boston Celtics vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Of the 30 teams, the Raptors are the most difficult team to predict because they win when they shouldn’t and vice versa. Facing the best team in the association even without Tatum should result in a loss right?
Well, that would be too simple for this complicated roster that can’t seem to decide if they want to fight for a playoff spot or raise the white flag on the season. Still, I’m going to stick with the Celtics to win and cover
