Sunday, March 13th the Philadelphia 76ers playing the Orlando Magic for the fourth and final meeting of the season. Philly has won all three prior meeting this season — November 29th (101-96), January 5th (116-106), and January 19th (123-110).
The 76ers last played Thursday when the Nets embarrassed them serving up a 100-129 loss on their home floor while the Magic played on Friday beating the red hot Wolves 118-110.
Last season, the squads played three times with the 76ers sweeping the regular-season series. The Magic holds the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 79 of their 124 matches.
Philadelphia 76ers
It was bad enough the 76ers had to lose to the Nets at Wells Fargo where fans had paid as much as $4,000 for a courtside seat but they’ve had to sit for days now replaying that game and listening to all the TV, radio and national media dissect the game as well.
I mean the players have to develop a tough skin to deal with losses in general but you have to wonder how Joel Embiid is feeling witnessing how James Harden pulled a Houdini in a game that should’ve mattered to him.
While Embiid didn’t have a stellar shooting night (5 of 17) the effort was there and he still was the best 76er on the court delivering a double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds and got to the line 19 times.
He needs far more assistance than he got Thursday with Harden shooting 3 of 17 and constantly complaining to the refs about not getting free throws. Harden finished with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and four turnovers in 30 minutes.
Tobias Harris offered 16 points and while some suggested he needed to do more the player who got all the shine in games leading up to Thursday was Tyrese Maxey and he like Harden seemed to shrink from the spotlight scoring just four points.
The Nets showcased how to limit Harden but they also exposed the 76ers defensive weaknesses. KD even spoke about it post-game citing the fact that Philly won’t make second and third efforts to switch so if you keep moving the ball and your players eventually you’ll get a wide-open shot.
Danny Green (finger) was downgraded to out Sunday in Orlando.
Orlando Magic
When you witness the Magic play like they did in the win on Friday there are reasons to believe this young squad will be a fun group next season.
With Jonathan Isaac back they should also take a step -so my already far too early hot take is the Magic will be a play-in seed next season (at a minimum).
As for the match on Friday, Mo Bamba was everywhere (and unfortunately got hurt on one of the last two plays). Orlando has seemingly taken a page out of the Cavaliers book and is playing Mo and Wendell Carter Jr. together to form the Magic Tower tandem.
They are excelling in this lineup as both registered double-doubles versus the Wolves with Mo putting up 27 points and 12 rebounds while WCJ produced 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Mo Wagner (18), Cole Anthony (15), and Markelle Fultz (14) were the other double-figure scorers.
Bamba (calf) and Jalen Suggs (ankle) are questionable to play Sunday. Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Bol Bol (foot) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Orlando are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Philadelphia is 6-2 SU in their last 8 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Orlando’s last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Philadelphia’s last 9 games.
Philadelphia 76ers vs. Orlando Magic NBA Analysis:
This should be an easy win for the 76ers but they certainly can’t roll into this match expecting to win or they’ll be upended like the Wolves were on Friday.
Philly should be dying to get on the court just to erase those Thursday memories but I’m not confident they can cover the spread.
