Game one of the Eastern Conference semi-finals between the fourth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers and top-seeded Miami Heat tips off on Monday, May 1st.
The 76ers took care of the Toronto Raptors in six games (4-2) while the Miami Heat defeated the Atlanta Hawks in a gentleman’s sweep (4-1).
Miami will host Game 1 today, Game 2, Wednesday, May 4, *Game 5, Tuesday, May 10, and *Game 7, Sunday, May 15 while Philadelphia will host Game 3, Friday, May 6, Game 4, Sunday, May 8, and *Game 6, Thursday, May 12 (*if necessary).
The teams split the 2021-22 season series 2-2 with the 76ers winning on January 15th (109-98) and March 21st (113-106) while the Heat won on December 15th (101-96) and March 5th (99-82).
The teams never faced each other at full strength with the Heat’s Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro missing two games while Jimmy Butler and Kyle Lowry each missed a game. Joel Embiid missed one game and James Harden wasn’t with the 76ers when the teams met this season.
The Heat holds the all-time advantage having won 67 times of the club’s 131 regular-season meetings.
This is the third time the clubs are playing in the postseason with each team taking one series. The Heat won the 4-1 in the first round of 2011 while the 76ers returned the favor in 2018 winning 4-1 in the first round.
Philadelphia 76ers
After a tougher first round than the 76ers expected they closed out the Raptors in a blow-out but not without consequence. Joel Embiid dunked late in Game 6 and pulled out the airplane wings much to the chagrin of the Raptors.
But on the very next play, he took an elbow to the face that resulted in an orbital fracture and a concussion that kept him in Philly and might keep him out of the series entirely.
That means Tyrese Maxey, James Harden and Tobias Harris will need to pick up the slack until Embiid can return to the court if at all in this series.
In four games versus the Heat, Maxey averaged 21.2 points and Harris averaged 19 points and 7.2 rebounds. Harden only faced Miami once while with the Nets way back on October 27th scoring 14 points with seven rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and a block.
Charles Bassey (shoulder) is questionable for Monday while Joel Embiid (concussion/ orbital fracture) is out with no definitive timeline for return.
Miami Heat
Although the Heat can’t bring the same type of lengthy defenders to the court that the Raptors did they are a superb defensive team who’ll be able to concentrate on Harden and Maxey without Embiid playing.
A key factor for the 76ers will be trying to get production out of their bench who ranked dead last in the first round scoring only 18.2 points whereas the Heat reserves scored 35.4 points.
Philly was the top-ranked team scoring 17 points on the fast break in the first round whereas the Heat limited opponents to 7.2 points which ranked second. The Sixers will also have to address scoring in the paint where the Heat limited the Hawks to 34.8 points.
Several Heat players are listed as questionable including Jimmy Butler (knee), P.J. Tucker (calf), Max Strus (hamstring), Markieff Morris (illness), Caleb Martin (ankle), and Tyler Herro (illness) while Kyle Lowry (hamstring) is out.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Philly was 6-8 this season without the services of Embiid and face a daunting challenge in this series not having their best player.
Despite the lengthy list of Heat players who are questionable, Butler and Adebayo provide the star production and they have so much depth the 76ers will be hard-pressed to get a split.
Even with Embiid, this series would be a challenge so unless he returns this should be an easy victory for Miami.
