The 76ers and Pacers hold identical 39-26 records but Indiana is seeded ahead in fifth by virtue of winning two of the three meetings. Both clubs are invested in trying to move up the East’s ladder to catch the Heat who they trail by two games.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers seemingly begin the restart as if it was a brand new season with an entirely new system featuring two major roster moves.
With Joel Embiid and Al Horford never fully meshing on the same line coach Brett Brown decided to start Shake Milton at the point and move Ben Simmons to power forward.
The resulting effect is Philly gains floor spacing and adds another ball handler into the mix. In a small sample size, the experiment is working but have the flaws been fully unearthed?
Theoretically, the changes are designed to put Embiid closer to the basket more frequently. However, if Simmons still refuses to shoot 3-pointers or even mid-range shots it still forces Embiid to take more shots in those areas and inevitably pulls him away from the basket.
Philly is hoping it will open up the floor but I’m not convinced it works against better defenses. Another big issue is reserve depth as the 76ers coughed up double-digit leads in two of their three scrimmages almost losing to the Grizzlies and losing to the Thunder.
Indiana Pacers
While most teams benefitted health-wise from the extended hiatus the Pacers are a team that is dealing with more injuries now.
Initially, Victor Oladipoo wasn’t sure he’d participate having returned from a year-long injury absence, playing in only 13 games prior to the hiatus. He elected to try things out appearing in all three scrimmages and is leaning toward playing.
But, this is tempered by bad news in the frontcourt. Domantas Sabonis left the bubble to address his plantar fasciitis and Goga Bitadze has a sore knee with both out indefinitely.
Adding insult to injury, Myles Turner is nursing a sore calf and will face the challenge of having to defend Embiid.
The 76ers big man didn’t play in either loss to Indy but dropped a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds in the 76ers lone win versus Indy.
Nate McMillan will need to get creative missing so much size and facing arguably the largest team in the East.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Over is 8-3 in IND last 11 games as an underdog.
- Under is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.
- PHI are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Indiana.
Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction:
While both teams are fixated on moving up they may change their minds with Boston becoming more appealing than Miami depending on the status of Kemba Walker’s knee.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: 76ers cover
The 76ers, in particular, would likely much rather play the Celtics than the Heat given their size advantage. Suffice to say there are several balls to keep in the air simultaneously.
Ultimately, in the first of eight seeded games, both clubs need to approach this with a must-win attitude and without Sabonis, the 76ers definitely have the edge.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
