Friday is the final day of the regular season in the Orlando Walt Disney Resort bubble.
Thursday’s board was strange enough with Washington favored over Boston, Phoenix favored largely over Dallas and Memphis over Milwaukee.
Those numbers were a result of teams having either a lot on the line or absolutely nothing at all.
Friday could present similar situations, though neither Philadelphia nor Houston have much to play for with playoff seedings just about locked up.
Philadelphia 76ers
Philadelphia cannot get out of the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference. It will meet Boston in the first round of the playoffs.
Ben Simmons is already done for the season after a procedure on one of his knees. That has already put a damper on Philly’s playoff hopes.
But Joel Embiid hurt his wrist in Wednesday’s tight loss to Toronto and, although x-rays were negative, he will almost certainly sit this game out with nothing on the line.
That should mean plenty of shots for the perimeter trio of Tobias Harris, Josh Richardson and Shake Milton, among others.
Houston Rockets
The Rockets entered Thursday tied with Oklahoma City and just a game ahead of Utah in the West.
The Jazz can’t catch them, however, even if it wins on Thursday and the Rockets lose this one. The tie-breaker is in Houston’s favor there.
The race with OKC is for the fourth spot but with home court advantage no longer in play, there really isn’t any difference between the fourth and fifth seeds. Those two will play each other in the first round.
Russell Westbrook has already been ruled out for this game and I don’t see why James Harden won’t rest either.
PJ Tucker left Houston’s game on Wednesday with a hand injury. It doesn’t appear to be serious but he’ll likely not take any chances in this one either.
