The Philadelphia 76ers face the Dallas Mavericks for the first time this season on Friday, February 4th. They’ll play once more in Philadelphia on March 18th.
Both teams played on Wednesday with the Rockets defeating the Cavaliers 120-114 in overtime while the 76ers battled to the buzzer losing 103-106 to the Wizards.
As two of the hotter teams in the association meet with both suffering disappointing losses, this match offers extra intrigue.
Last season, the squads played twice with Philadelphia winning both contests. The Mavericks holds the advantage all-time having won 40 times of the club’s 79 meetings.
Philadelphia 76ers
In one of the few times Joel Embiid wasn’t able to pull out the win for the 76ers it served as a reminder that Ben Simmons is sitting out and begs the question of whether not moving him by the deadline could cost the Sixers.
Sure, Daryl Morey wants to get value for his star point guard, but the fact he’s just sitting there isn’t adding value to his stock as it only serves to make other franchises question his commitment.
Especially as further reports surface like Ramona Shelburne’s article that noted Simmons was annoyed Doc Rivers didn’t come seek him out in LA.
Factoring in Simmons told the players and coaches NOT to come when they contacted him to do precisely that speaks to how messed up the relationship is.
I fail to see how Simmons stock is going to climb the longer he sits and it starts to turn into more of a fight for one side to “win” this standoff. From the franchise’s perspective, they are saving money based on the fines but they’re also flirting with losing a title by holding out.
As for Simmons, how he’ll ever convince another franchise he loves the game and can be a great teammate becomes more difficult the longer he sits and refuses to play. With him stating it’s a mental health issue it’s also an issue unless this is all a ploy to stay off the court.
If not, then why would he be able to suddenly feel well enough to play just because he got traded. Moreover, what franchise will trust he’ll be invested in their team, identity, and culture and not do exactly the same thing to them if he doesn’t get his way?
Seth Curry (back) is questionable while Furkan Korkmaz (knee) was downgraded to out on Friday. Shake Milton (back) is out indefinitely.
Dallas Mavericks
Every team will suffer losses but when a club considered to be among the elite loses to a tanking squad (Thunder) missing their top player it elicits calls that the other team didn’t come with enough focus or effort.
To be fair, no team will win every game and this time of the year is tough as players are fatigued and in need of a break. Sure, it might be considered a trap game as Dallas fell but unless this situation grows into a losing streak it’s probably best just to chalk this one up to one of those off games.
Luka Doncic offered a double-double of 40 points and 10 assists with six rebounds, and three steals but failed to score with the ball in his hands to win the game.
Reggie Bullock (23), Jalen Brunson (20), and Maxi Kleber (10) were the other double-figure scorers. Notably, the Mavericks’ defensive effort wasn’t on hand the majority of the game as they seemed to flirt with believing they could just come back to win.
Porzingis (knee) and Sterling Brown (foot) were both downgraded to out Friday while Tim Hardaway Jr. underwent surgery to repair a foot fracture and will be out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Philadelphia are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games.
- Dallas are 13-5 SU in their last 18 games.
- Philadelphia are 8-1 SU in their last 9 games on the road.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Dallas’ last 5 games.
Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
Tough matchup with the Mavericks having several big bodies they can send at Embiid and the 76ers who possess a defensive system that could cause Dallas (and Doncic) issues. Even the oddsmakers aren’t sure who’ll win giving that meager one-point spread.
It sort of comes down to who you believe has more capacity to steal a game for his team and my nod goes to Embiid who has been lights out lately and will be annoyed they lost last time out.
