Wednesday, March 16th the Philadelphia 76ers face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the third of four scheduled meetings this season. Philly won both prior meetings on February 12th (103-93) and March 4th (125-119). The final match is scheduled for April 3rd in Cleveland.
Both teams last played on Monday with the 76ers losing to the Nuggets 110-114 while the Cavaliers defeated the shorthanded Clippers in overtime 120-111.
All-time the 76ers have the advantage of winning 112 of 218 matches versus the Cavaliers. Last season the teams played three times with the Cavaliers winning two of the three contests.
Philadelphia 76ers
The shine of James Harden might have worn off slightly as the five-game winning streak has been followed by three losses in their last five games. All three losses occurred versus the better clubs (Heat, Nets, Nuggets) while the two wins were against the Bulls and Magic.
Even the victory versus Orlando required overtime which begs the question of whether this 76ers team has ample work to do prior to the postseason.
Joel Embiid is doing his part and while he lost the matchup versus the guy most likely to challenge him for the MVP award (Nikola Jokic) and registered 34 points, nine rebounds, four assists, an assist, and two blocks. Jokic scored less (22 points) but also collected 13 rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Despite the loss, Embiid didn’t lose the award based on that one game because he scored more on Jokic than the Nuggets big man did on him so there is still an argument for either center to win.
With those losses though the 76ers have slipped into third and with the prospect of having to face this Cavaliers team if the standings finish where the teams reside today this game takes on greater emphasis to be the victor.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Like the 76ers the Cavaliers are battling for their seeding and have slipped from a high of second to their current sixth seed. They’ve lost ground in just one week from having a 3.5 game lead over the Raptors to a single game.
They lucked out in their last match facing a Clippers squad who rested their top two offensive threats (Reggie Jackson, Marcus Morris Sr.) but still needed overtime to collect the win.
Darius Garland has played masterfully as has rookie Evan Mobley but the defense has taken a hit without Jarrett Allen available. Notably, Garland was shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from the perimeter prior to Allen’s injury.
Including the game versus Toronto when Allen got hurt and the four games since Garland’s efficiency has dramatically dropped off as he’s shooting 40.0 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from the perimeter. Moreover, his turnovers have risen to 5.4 per game up from 3.8 per game.
Rajon Rondo (ankle) and Dean Wade (knee) were both downgraded to out for Wednesday. Jarrett Allen (finger) is out indefinitely while Collin Sexton (knee) is out for the season.

The Cavaliers will be more desperate to collect this victory to hang onto that sixth seed. If they lose and the Raptors beat the Clippers the teams will be tied although Cleveland would still have the edge based on owning the series tiebreak.
Still, with Toronto on a hot streak, it’s not an ideal situation for the Cavs who are suddenly in jeopardy of dropping into the play-in which is precisely what I predicted would happen this week. Cleveland faces the Nuggets next and closes out the week versus a much improved Pistons club.
Without Allen, they’ll be hard-pressed to stop Joel Embiid and the 76ers will be motivated to get back in the win column following three matches where they haven’t looked like the same team that was feasting when James Harden first joined them.
