The best two words in sports is Game 7 and NBA fans get to witness a Mother’s Day version courtesy of the Boston Celtics who beat the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday 95 to 86.
It’s the final game of the semi-finals bracket with the Nuggets, Lakers, and Heat all advancing via victories in Game 6 of their series.
At this time, the 76ers are 54-37-1 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 26-19-1 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the Celtics are 52-41-1 against the spread this season. Also, they are 27-20 ATS as the home team
Boston won the season series 3-1 with victories on October 18th (126-117), February 8th (106-99), and 25th (110-107) while the 76ers took the final meeting 103-101 on April 4th.
Boston holds the all-time advantage having won 267 times of the club’s 463 meetings, last year the teams played four times with the Celtics winning three of the four contests.
The teams have a long history of meeting in the postseason facing each other in 21 times with Boston possessing the advantage 14 to 7 including the last meeting in 2020 when the Celts swept the 76ers.
Wells Fargo was lit with energy as the fans were trying to will their squad to the Conference Finals. With just under six minutes remaining, they held a slim two-point lead but scored only three points in that final 5:57 stretch.
Worse Joel Embiid only took two shots in that segment which partially speaks to the Celtics defense and partially to a lack of adjustments by Doc Rivers to create a set that would give his MVP the ball more.
James Harden was AWOL shooting 4 of 16 (0-6 from deep) with five turnovers and in that pivotal clutch time segment kept jacking up bad shots or complaining to the refs about no calls.
Embiid and Tyrese Maxey each scored 26 but again, the 76ers big man needed more touches and that’s an adjustment Doc is going to have to make prior to Game 7.
So far this season, the 76ers score an average of 115.2 points per game ranking 14th. Philly shoots 48.7% from the field and 38.7% from the perimeter, ranking sixth and first respectively.
What’s more, defense is where the 76ers make their mark allowing the third-fewest opponent points per game with 110.9 and the fifth-best perimeter defense at 34.8% while ranking 14th for opponent field goal percentage allowing opponents to shoot 47.3%.
To summarize the injury report…
- No injuries
Boston has been the most difficult team to predict this postseason because their depth and talent should’ve dictated a fast track to the Conference Finals but they’ve lost when they should win and won in games that seemed to be trending toward losses.
Joe Mazzulla’s stubbornness to fixate on small ball and chain some of his bigs to the bench finally ended as he to returned Robert Williams to the starting rotation. You know, the big man who was the key reason why the Celtics were the best defensive squad a season ago.
Jayson Tatum began the game shooting 1 of 15 missing all six of his 3-point attempts but finished the game with 19 points as his deep ball finally started to fall which was the difference in the match.
Five Celtics finished with double-digit scoring led by Marcus Smart with 22.
On the positive side, Boston claims the fourth-best point production averaging 117.9 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.5% from the field and 37.6% from the perimeter ranking 15th and sixth respectively.
Presently, opponents average 111.4 points per game which rank fifth. Celtics opponents are limited to 46.3% from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking fifth and fourth respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Danilo Gallinari, SF (OUT indefinitely — ACL)

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Logically the hometown team is favored but before you rush to place a bet consider the Celtics record at TD Garden. Boston is 9-9 at home in their last 18 home playoff games, 3-3 this postseason, and 1-2 versus the 76ers at TD Garden in this series.
By the same token, Doc Rivers is 17-32 in series-clinching opportunities, and in his coaching career is 7-9 in Game 7’s, however, three of those wins came in the Celtics title run.
Doc hasn’t won a Game 7 (0-4) since beating the Warriors in the first round in 2015 prior to imploding as his Clippers lost a 3-1 series lead to the Rockets.
Suffice to say, neither team has consistently given a reason to trust this is a slam dunk and it feels more likely this will be a defensively closely contested battle that comes down to clutch time.
From a personal preference having Jimmy Butler return to the team that valued Tobias Harris more and where Kyle Lowry grew up would offer a compelling series. That said, I can’t ignore the home team’s historic record or the Celtics’ depth.
I’ll still take the points but begrudgingly pick the Celts to win.
