The 2022-23 NBA season tips off on Tuesday, October 18th with the Philadelphia 76ers playing inter-division rival the Boston Celtics. Both teams are considered title contenders and will want to make a big splash on opening night.
The clubs last faced each other on February 15th of last year and split the season series 2-2. Both clubs bring back the majority of their core although they each made discernible tweaks in the offseason to bolster their depth.
The Celtics hold the all-time record between the clubs with 263 wins in 457 meetings versus the 76ers. Philly was one of two squads who registered a perfect pre-season defeating the Nets, Hornets and Cavaliers twice.
Boston split their preseason games handily defeating the Hornets twice and losing both overtime contests versus the Raptors.

A quick glance at the Sixers bench might summon memories of the Houston Rockets as Director of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey keeps adding players from his time spent in Texas.
In addition to James Harden, Morey added three former Rockets this offseason with P.J. Tucker, Danuel House Jr., and Montrezl Harrell all joining the club.
Each addresses a specific weakness the 2021-22 club was looking to resolve with Tucker and Harrell offering added grit and House providing more floor spacing.
The resulting effect is a much deeper squad for Doc Rivers to utilize and perennial MVP candidate Joel Embiid having arguably the best-assembled supporting cast as well as the right mixture of talent of his tenure in Philly.
Harden spent the offseason getting back into peak condition with an eye to muffling his critics. He’ll provide the complementary production beside Embiid while the Sixers hope youngster Tyrese Maxey can build upon his breakout campaign of 2022 and offer more consistency.
This club is poised to rank in the top five of both offense and defense and should be considered both Conference and Title contenders.
Boston Celtics
Adversity hit the Celtics before they even laced up their kicks in training camp. The shocking news that Head Coach Ime Udoka would be suspended for the year took the players and fans by surprise.
Joe Mazzulla takes the helm moving from a second-row assistant chair to the front of the bench and if the preseason was any indication is much closer in style to former bench boss Brad Stevens than Udoka.
His demeanor will offer a calming effect over his charges but the question is whether the absence of Udoka who was adept at pushing the right buttons via his aggressive style will backfire over the long haul.
Despite their finals appearance Stevens didn’t rest on his laurels adding depth to the roster albeit the addition of Danilo Gallinari won’t pay dividends as he tore his ACL this summer.
Malcolm Brogdon was the key offseason addition acquired via trade while Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet were re-signed along with free agent signings of Justin Jackson, Blake Griffin and Noah Vonleh.

Like Toronto, the 76ers are long and athletic which will test the Bean Town crew right out of the gate. Both clubs will be eager to win this first test and send a message of what is in store this season.
Jayson Tatum has been tapped as a potential MVP candidate but after finishing second in consecutive seasons the big man from Cameroon could finally win that elusive trophy with what appears to be his perfectly tailored supporting cast.
Until the Celtics prove they can be competitive on the glass and stop turning over the ball teams with length will feast on them and subsequently, I like Philly and the points in the opener.
