Thursday, November 10th, the Philadelphia 76ers and Atlanta Hawks play the first of four meetings between the Southeast Division Rivals.
Atlanta will host on Saturday, November 12th to complete the home-and-home series set and again on November 28th while Philly will host the final meeting on April 7th.
Philly arrives having last played Monday in an impressive 100-88 winning effort versus the Suns while the Hawks are completing a back-to-back set having lost 119-125 to the Jazz on Wednesday.
Last season, the squads played three times with Philly winning two of the three contests. The 76ers hold the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 198 of their 390 matches.
Philadelphia 76ers
Just as the 76ers seemed to find their mojo injuries began to ravage the roster. Joel Embiid missed time for a sore knee and a non-COVID illness but as he prepared for a return James Harden exited and will miss a month with a pulled tendon in his foot.
Harden was averaging a double-double of 22 points and 10 assists along with 7 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and hitting 2.2 long balls per match. Embiid is registering a team-high 27.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks.
With Harden out, the emphasis will be on Tyrese Maxey to be more involved in the playmaking and no doubt gain more touches to bolster his 24.2 points per game.
The x-factor could be Tobias Harris whose touches and production are down given the presence of Harden, plus the ascent of Maxey and his role change.
Philadelphia vacillates all over offensively scoring the 25th ranked points per game (108.9), shooting 46.7 percent from the field which ranks 25th but shooting an impressive 39.2 percent from the perimeter which ranks fourth in the NBA.
Opponents average 109.2 points per game (ranking 9th). As for shooting efficiency, it’s opposite ends of the spectrum… they excel at protecting the perimeter — opponents shoot 32.8% ranked fourth-best but overall foes shoot 47.5% from the field which ranks 24th.
Danuel House (illness) is upgraded to probable. James Harden (foot/tendon) will miss the next month of action.
Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young and his new backcourt partner Dejounte Murray are producing in the stat column but have noticeably struggled against the better clubs.
Young is leading the team with 27.5 points and 9.4 assists while Murray is filling up the box score averaging 22.0 points, 7.8 assists, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.4 steals.
Although Young is attempting more 3-pointers (7.9 vs. 5.9), Murray is hitting them with a higher efficiency 40.4% versus 31.7%.
John Collins is averaging a double-double of 13.5 points and 10.3 rebounds but while he’s experienced an uptick in minutes his shot attempts are down.
Atlanta boasts solid statistics to showcase their defensive acumen, particularly in terms of holding opponents to lower shooting efficiencies such as 45.2% from the field which ranks eighth and the sixth-best on opponent perimeter efficiency (33.8%).
They aren’t quite as stellar at stopping scoring in general however as opponents score 114.6 points per game which rank 20th.
Offensively, Atlanta scores 116.5 per game ranking sixth. They shoot 46.9% from the field (15th) and 34.8 from the perimeter (19th).
Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The 76ers are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Atlanta are 16-4 SU in their last 20 games at home.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Philadelphia’s last 5 games on the road.
- The total has gone OVER in 7 of Atlanta’s last 9 games.
Philadelphia 76ers vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
I’m not sold on the Hawks’ defensive stats especially given their early easy schedule. They’ve yet to play a baseball set and this is only their second back-to-back set (the lowest of the top East teams).
Four of their seven wins are against tanking teams with a combined 8-37 record. Granted they also beat the Knicks, Pelicans (in overtime) and their best win of the season was ending the Bucks’ win streak without Trae Young in the lineup.
But their four losses feature three teams with winning records (Raptors who shellacked them by 30, Bucks, and this recent Jazz loss). Let’s just say I need to see where the Hawks are after a tough schedule stretch and having to play several top teams consecutively.
This matchup offers one of the newer rivalries and granted the 76ers haven’t looked great out of the gate either, but I’ll take them and the points.
