The moves made by General Manager, Elton Brand to create the lankiest starting five in the association lasted only 27 regular season and 12 playoff games last season. With the exits of two key starters, Brand recovered quickly adding Al Horford and Josh Richardson. That said, there are discernable gaps and more specifically, Butler and Redick’s defined roles will require some ingenuity to fill.
Philadelphia 76ers Strengths:
Starting rotation length:
Incredibly the huge starting lineup from last season got even taller with the exit of the 6’4″ Redick and 6’8 Butler. They’ll be replaced by the 6’8″ Richardson and 6’10” Horford. Few teams in the league will be able to counter that length let alone the talent.
Arguably, the 76ers starting rotation will be even better defensively. Moreover, while Horford can play either frontcourt role his preference is to play the four. He’ll serve as a viable starting option at center if the Sixers elect to load manage Joel Embiid more this season.
Additionally, both players are comfortable playing roles and fitting into team ball so it may serve to help the 76ers and make the offensive pecking order easier for Brett Brown.

Joel Embiid:
The Cameroonian big man had a summer to reflect on the highest of highs and lowest of lows. One minute he was pantomiming flying in front of his adoring hometown Wells Fargo Center fans. The next he was exiting the Scotiabank Arena in tears having defended the eventual NBA Finals MVP about as perfect as one could only to have his heart ripped out as the 76ers season ended.
While Anthony Davis and Nikola Jokic are incredible talents when healthy Joel Embiid is debatably the best big man in the game with the potential to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.
Philadelphia 76ers Weaknesses:
Perimeter Shooting:
Initially, the absence of JJ Redick will stand out more than the loss of Butler because of his perimeter shooting prowess. It’s not just that Redick hits the 3-ball at a healthy clip (39.7 percent) it’s his constant movement which keeps opposing defenses guessing and subsequently opened the floor for drives by Ben Simmons or rim rolls by Embiid.

Although his replacement (Richardson) connects at 35.7% efficiency the issue is where the Sixers will find the majority of their perimeter scoring this season. Of the Sixers *top 10 perimeter scorers only Mike Scott (41.2%), Jonah Bolden (35.4%) and Tobias Harris (32.6%) remain.
*minimum 10 games played and 1.0 attempted trey per game
Who replaces clutch time Jimmy?
The 76ers excelled at using Embiid as the primary option until closing time when Butler took over. This became even more pronounced in the postseason when Butler’s two-way game, ability to create for others and also function as the primary scorer allowed the entire clutch time group to excel.
While Butler’s loss may not be immediately a problem, in close games and in the postseason Brett Brown will need to figure out who replaces Jimmy. The logical answer is Embiid, but he’ll need to cut down on turnovers and improve his decision making.
Philadelphia 76ers Betting Prediction: 56-26
Based on the sheer star power and defensive ability of this club Philly should easily surpass the predicted over/under of 55.0 games.
How much they improve and how deep they get in the postseason comes down to the ability of their two young stars to showcase growth. Simmons specifically needs to demonstrate an improvement in his shooting efficiency at a minimum from the mid-range and the charity stripe.
