Friday, March 4th the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors meet for the second of three scheduled matches this season. Toronto won the initial match 110-109 on October 29th. The final meeting will occur on April 1st in Orlando.
Toronto is playing their third consecutive back-to-back set having lost 106-108 to the Pistons on Thursday while the Magic played Wednesday losing 114-122 in overtime to the Pacers.
The teams have played a total of 93 occasions in their history with the Raptors winning 54 contests. Last season, the clubs played three times, with the Raptors sweeping the series and holding an eight-game win streak over the Magic.
Orlando Magic
After two consecutive wins, the Magic were up 18 and poised to win a third in a row but allowed Indy to erase the deficit to force overtime.
Orlando scored a mere four points in the extra period (Indy scored 12) and looked like the team who’ve lost 48 matches, not the team who had won two in a row.
With 13 points and 18 rebounds, Wendell Carter Jr. extended his double-double streak to six in a row. Franz Wagner was the top Magic scorer with 28 points.
Mo Bamba also registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. All five starters plus Markelle Fultz (11) scored in double-figures.
Mo Wagner (ribs) was downgraded to out for Friday. Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Bol Bol (foot) are out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
No doubt Nick Nurse is thankful his team won’t have to play the Pistons again after getting swept by Detroit for the third time in four years during Dwane Casey’s era.
From the tip, the Pistons were channeling the Bad Boys with the refs allowing that level of physicality. Early in the game, Scottie Barnes got fouled hard slamming to the court with his back and head hitting the court.
Siakam got undercut by Kelly Olynyk and fell so hard he bounced. Neither call was reviewed but Precious Achuiwa received a flagrant one for a far less egregious foul.
Barnes delivered a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds (6 offensive) while Siakam scored a game-high 28 points.
Nurse was ejected late in the third, arguing a call. He told reporters it probably wasn’t good I saw the replay saying “You can only take so much.” As Nurse exited a closeup revealed Casey grinning from ear to ear.
After Detroit shot the free throws for Nurse’s technical and the argued call they led by 18 points. Nurse’s ejection sparked the team who cut the lead to a single point with 37.7 seconds remaining but got no closer.
While the whistle variance can be argued by the same token Toronto had an additional eight free throws but they missed nine of 36 attempts.
Fred VanVleet (knee) and Thaddeus Young (illness) are questionable while DJ Wilson (knee) was downgraded to out Friday. OG Anunoby (finger) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 10-0 in the team’s last 10 head to head meetings
- The Raptors are 9-1 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over Under is 6-4 in the team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Orlando Magic vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
The Magic have a decided rest advantage playing their fourth game in eight days compared to Toronto’s sixth and third consecutive back-to-back.
Following that very physical match who knows how much Toronto has left in the tank but they are 9-4 in second games of back-to-backs.
VanVleet and Anunoby are likely both out so the other key is health given those hard falls Barnes and Siakam took. It’s possible they could be without 4/5ths of the starting lineup.
Toronto is resilient and should win but it might be a closer game than they’d like so take the points and Orlando.
