Saturday, February 12th, finds the Orlando Magic playing the Phoenix Suns for the first time this season. The teams will play again with Orlando hosting on March 8th.
Orlando is playing a back-to-back set having faced the Jazz on Friday and losing 99-114 while the Suns last played Thursday routing the Bucks 131-107.
Last season, the squads met twice with each team winning on their home court. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 37 of their 63 matches.
Orlando Magic
Among the surprises of the trade deadline was neither Terrence Ross or Gary Harris were dealt. The only move the Magic made was to take on the contracts of Bol Bol and PJ Dozier from the Celtics for cash and a future second-round pick.
To accommodate adding the above contracts Orlando waived E’Twaun Moore and Michael Carter-Williams and now there are murmurs Orlando may buy out Harris.
In recent weeks the Magic are playing their best ball of the season with a 5-5 record in their last 10 matches.
Although Orlando did surprise the Bulls and Mavericks the other elite teams were prepared not to fall for the trap game with the Bulls, Grizzlies, Celtics, and Jazz each collecting victories with a margin of victory no less than 11 points.
Wendell Carter Jr. led the way on Friday with 22 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and a block. The trio of Cole Anthony (18), Mo Bamba (16), and Terrence Ross (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Mo Wagner (ribs) is questionable for Saturday. Jonathan Isaac (knee), Markelle Fultz (knee), Bol Bol (foot), and RJ Hampton (knee) are all out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
Some didn’t like the move by the Suns to send Jalen Smith (and a future second-round pick) to the Pacers for Torrey Craig but it’s not that surprising.
Consider how well Craig played for the Suns in his last stint with them. I was surprised they let him go because of the fit and being an economical salary. When Jae Crowder was out this year I recall thinking if they had Torrey Craig still he would plugin perfectly.
Craig is a gritty defender who has no issues playing his role and navigates easily between just being a tough-nosed defender or providing additional scoring if required.
As for Smith, the Suns clearly already deemed him, someone they weren’t willing to extend, didn’t want to invest in, and while he played well this season, show me any big man that doesn’t play well with Chris Paul.
Ultimately, instead of letting Smith walk for nothing, they add depth, experience, and insurance for the playoffs.
Aaron Holiday (newly acquired), Torrey Craig (newly acquired) are questionable for Saturday. Abdel Nader (knee), Landry Shamet (ankle), Cameron Payne (wrist), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are all out indefinitely

Free Orlando Magic vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
While a 16 point spread seems absurd consider the Magic’s last four losses and the margin of victory of the opponent. Chicago won by 11, Memphis by 20, Boston by 33, and Utah by 15.
With that in mind, the Suns beating them by 16 seems like a reasonable marker.
