Two squads both seeking to cement specific playoff berths tip-off on Friday, early evening as the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic plays the sixth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers.
In two previous meetings between the clubs this season, the Magic won both.
Orlando Magic
To start the ‘seeding’ games the Magic were on an offensive terror having averaged 123 points through their initial three matches. And then they ran into the bubble’s best defense and second overall on the season in the Toronto Raptors.
The Raptors held Orlando to 11 first-quarter points that came precariously close to not reaching double-digits without foul shots by Aaron Gordon.
By the end of the second quarter, the Magic trailed by 20 points with their 35 first-half points a season-low. The Magic returned from the break playing with aggression and quickly cut into the lead.
Then a hard foul by Kyle Lowry was deemed flagrant sending Aaron Gordon from the match with hamstring tightness.
Orlando cut the lead to seven at one point but the Raptors combination of lockdown defense and balanced scoring was too much to overcome.
Another Magic win or Wizards loss will secure their playoff berth, while the Nets are a half-game ahead in seventh. Given the Raptors’ dominance over Orlando, it might behoove them to remain in eighth to take a shot at the Bucks.
They have the size to address Antetokounmpo and can get hot from deep which is one way to beat Milwaukee.
Terrence Ross and Evan Fournier led the scoring with 15 points while three others contributed double-figure scores.
Gordon is out Friday.
Philadelphia 76ers
This 76ers team has provided more fodder for the pundits than almost every team combined. Entering the bubble a new narrative emerged with Brett Brown moving Al Horford to the bench in favor of starting Shake Milton.
In the first seeded game of this experiment, Joel Embiid and Milton argued but when Milton delivered the game-winner in the next match all was forgiven.
Unfortunately, more tweaks will be required at least in the short-term after Ben Simmons landed awkwardly grabbing a rebound causing his knee cap to shift. Simmons time line for return is unknown but undoubtedly the 76ers will exercise caution.
The 76ers are in a dog fight with the Pacers for the fifth seed while the Heat and Celtics are fighting to claim the third seed with Toronto looking like a lock to grab second.
Positions are still up in the air but as of posting Toronto leads Boston by 4.5 games who are ahead of Miami by 3.5 games. The Heat are up 1.0 and 1.5 games on the Pacers and 76ers respectively.
The question is which is the better path to the Conference finals. Based on current seeding finishing fifth would require beating the Heat and Raptors whereas the sixth seed would equate to series versus the Celtics and Bucks.
NBA Betting Trends:
- ORL are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
- Over is 8-1 in PHI last 9 overall.
- Over is 7-1 in ORL last 8 vs. Eastern Conference.
Free Orlando Magic vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Philly still has Joel Embiid but they’ve had a tough time closing out games and delivering 48 minutes of focused defense. Both teams enjoy getting into free-flowing offensive battles so this could quickly turn into a track meet.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Magic plus points +5
Steve Clifford will have his troop fired up but the 76ers even without Simmons have more talent.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
