Wednesday, March 9th, finds the Orlando Magic and New Orleans Pelicans playing for the second and final time this season. The Pelicans won the initial meeting 110-104 on December 23rd.
Both teams are playing Tuesday in the front side of a back-to-back set with the Magic losing 102-99 in a tightly contested game versus the Suns while the Pelicans got pummelled 111-132 by the Grizzlies.
Last season, the squads played twice splitting the contests and each team winning on the road. The Magic hold the advantage all-time winning 22 of the 42 matches versus the Pelicans.
Orlando Magic
Wendell Carter Jr. returned to the lineup after missing the last two games and was a force delivering a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds.
His frontcourt partner Mo Bamba came one point shy (nine) of matching him as he grabbed 15 rebounds.
Mo Wagner (12), Cole Anthony (11), and Markelle Fultz (11) were the other trio to score in double-figures.
Jalen Suggs (ankle) is questionable. Markelle Fultz (knee) who is back after 14 months isn’t listed on the injury report but it wouldn’t be surprising if they rest him given it’s a back-to-back situation.
Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Bol Bol (foot) are out indefinitely.
New Orleans Pelicans
Not having Brandon Ingram available made a huge difference for the Pelicans as the Grizzlies were able to concentrate their defense more intensely on CJ McCollum and that equated to the Pels struggling to score.
He still managed to deliver a double-double of 32 points and 11 assists plus six rebounds and did so on an efficient 13 of 21 from the field shooting 5 of 10 from deep. Herb Jones and Jonas Valanciunas were the other starters to score in double-figures each contributing 10 points.
But with the Grizzlies building a 19-point halftime lead and with a game the next night coach Willie Green played his reserves more and subsequently, Willie Hernangomez (17 points, nine rebounds) and Naji Marshall (16 points) got extended playing time and delivered.
Brandon Ingram (hamstring) is questionable for Wednesday. Larry Nance Jr. (knee) is out indefinitely.
Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season and Williamson (foot) continues to be out.
