On Saturday, March 5th, the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies play for the second and final time this season. Memphis won the initial match 135-115 on February 5th in Orlando.
Orlando is playing a back-to-back set having completed the frontside in a 103-97 victory versus Toronto while the Grizzlies look to rebound after losing 109-120 in Boston on Thursday.
Last season, the squads met twice with the teams splitting the regular-season series and each winning on their home court. The Magic holds the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 25 of their 49 matches.
Orlando Magic
You’ll often hear analysts suggest a player “just needs a fresh start in a new location”. That’s typically accompanied by trade talks especially if a player is suffering regression or doesn’t fit the scheme/roster compilation.
A great example of this situation proving to be true is Wendell Carter Jr. who was selected seventh overall in 2018 showed promise early in Chicago but then seemingly got stuck in a rut and was included in the trade for Nikola Vucevic.
In Orlando, he’s coming into his own with the Magic averaging a double-double of 14.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists which are all career-bests.
Next season when 6’11 Jonathan Isaac returns the Magic starting frontcourt should be very effective with Carter and Franz Wagner comprising a versatile, lengthy, athletic trio.
Markelle Fultz (knee) and Mo Wagner (ribs) are probable, Jalen Suggs (ankle) is questionable for Saturday. Wendell Carter Jr. (illness) is out. Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Bol Bol (foot) are out indefinitely.
Memphis Grizzlies
Although Ja Morant scored 38 and had yet another incredible dunk in the Garden this match never felt like a typical Grizzlies’ game. Part of that is because of the Celtics’ defense although it seemed more like an off night by Memphis.
As one of only four teams with 40 or more wins this young squad was due for an off night.
Morant’s 38 points featured 13 0f 29 from the field, 4 of 12 from deep, and 8 of 8 from the line. He also added four rebounds and seven assists. Jaren Jackson offered 20 points and seven rebounds while Desmond Bane registered 17 points and seven assists.
Only the trio scored in double-figures which perhaps is why this game felt off. Boston’s bench ranks 26th in bench scoring while the Grizzlies rank ninth. Yet in this match, it was the Bean Town crew who had the more productive night with 34 points compared to 23 points.
Kyle Anderson (foot) is questionable for Saturday. Yves Pons (thigh) was downgraded to out Saturday while Dillon Brooks remains listed as out indefinitely.

More importanty Memphis has to play Sunday to finish the back-to-back so Coach Jenkins will be encouraging them to take care of business early. And even still I’m not comfortable with the 15.5 point spread.
