Two of the better young teams square off on Saturday as the Orlando Magic face the Memphis Grizzlies.

Both clubs are completing a back-to-back set having played on Friday. Orlando defeated the Nets 116-101, while the Grizzlies got trampled 108-128 by the Rockets.

Season Series

The teams split the season series last year each winning on their home floor. Memphis holds the all-time record between the squads with 29 victories in 55 matches.

Orlando Magic

I noted in my initial preview the Magic were a sneaky pick to contend for a home-court seed and they’ve started the season undefeated. That’s not an outlier as Orlando has historically come out of the gates hot and then faded quickly.

This season feels different however and for as much as I still have questions about Banchero to this point in the season he’s given me fodder to reassess. After leading his squad versus the Heat he was more of a playmaker versus the Nets finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, and nine dimes.

Magic Stats

The Magic ranked 22nd offensively (112.9) and third defensively (110.8) while possessing the 14th-rated net differential of plus +2.2 this past season.

Orlando was one of the better bets against the spread this season, possessing a 55-34 record through 89 games.

Memphis Grizzlies

Turnovers and poor rebounding cost the Grizzlies the match versus the Rockets. Jaren Jackson Jr. remained out and is questionable for Saturday.

His absence (and that of Joel Embiid) is proving rosters lacking in size are finding it harder to stop lengthier squads.

Ja Morant led the way for the Grizz (27 points) in scoring but had just two assists. Still, once triple J is back I like the makeup of this team to be in the mix on more nights than not.

Miami ranked 21st offensively (113.3) and fifth defensively (111.5) with a plus net differential of  +1.8 ranking in a tie for 16th overall in 2023-24.

The Heat rode the middle ground this past season against the spread with a 43-44-2 record through 89 matches.
