Wednesday, February 2nd finds the Orlando Magic playing the Indiana Pacers for the first time this season. The clubs will play twice more with Orlando hosting on February 28th and March 2nd.
The Magic are playing a back-to-back set having lost 115-126 to the Bulls on Tuesday while the Pacers last played Monday beating the Clippers 122-116.
Last season, the teams played three times with Indiana sweeping the series and holding a six-game win streak versus the Magic. The Pacers hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 67 of their 116 matches
Orlando Magic
While the Magic possess the worst record in the NBA there are palpable signs of improvement from this young squad. They’ll be headed back to the lottery this offseason but could make a big leap as soon as next year.
That’s partially due to the loss of two of the team’s core stars in Jonathan Isaac and Markelle Fultz who aren’t likely to play this season.
Considering their absence the Magic will have choices to make when they do return as the other youngsters on the club developed. The big question will be which of the players the franchise considers the core.
For example, without Fultz in the equation rookie Jalen Suggs and sophomore Cole Anthony got ample playing time and the opportunity to shine. When Fultz returns though, copious decisions will need to be made.
Do the Magic want to keep all of them? Or do they want to move one of them in order to ensure the minutes aren’t split to the level where regression occurs from the loss of rhythm?
The Magic could find themselves in the same position as the Grizzlies currently given this young depth. Or they could end up in a similar situation to what the Hawks are or rather were in. With too many mouths to feed and not enough shots available to accommodate.
E’Twaun Moore (knee), Michael Carter-Williams (ankle), Jonathan Isaac (knee), Markelle Fultz (knee), and RJ Hampton (knee) are all out indefinitely.
Indiana Pacers
If you have to pick a team who is the biggest disappointment this season it’s likely the Pacers. They brought back Rick Carlisle to coach a group that had in hindsight likely been overachieving for a few seasons.
Like the Blazers there was ample time committed to allowing Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner to mesh but that experiment never really took shape.
It worked best while Nate McMillan was still coaching the team. But after a third coaching change and no advancement, it’s likely one of those two will be dealt at the deadline and at worst in the offseason.
Similarly, Malcolm Brogdon and Caris LeVert haven’t exactly meshed well although in fairness to their specific situation injuries have played a big role in not allowing time to gauge if they fit beside each other.
Likewise, TJ Warren who looked like a steal has been out for a significant time and the success he experienced is so far in the rear view mirror by the time he returns many of the players he thrived with will have changed.
Moving forward, expect Indy to be busy at the deadline as they try to save a lost season.
Oshae Brissett (ankle) is questionable while Domantas Sabonis and Goga Bitadze (foot) were downgraded to out versus the Magic on Wednesday. Myles Turner (foot), Malcolm Brogdon (Achilles), T.J. McConnell (wrist), and TJ Warren (foot) are all out indefinitely.

Free Orlando Magic vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction
Lots of injuries on both sides but with the Pacers missing so much of their core it feels like this could be another win for Orlando. At worst, they should be able to keep the score close.
