The 2022-23 NBA season tips off for the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, October 19th. With the league displaying more parity and opportunity than any season in recent recollection, these two clubs are among the handful not expected to be in the mix.
That’s because there is an unprecedented talent generational talent available in the 2023 draft – – Victor Wembanyama who could turn a franchise into a contender virtually upon his arrival. In fact, this draft class is deep with Scoot Henderson an equally enticing prospect.
The Magic sure weren’t tanking in the preseason as they delivered a 4-1 record losing only to the Grizzlies while registering wins versus the Cavaliers, Grizzlies, Mavericks, and Spurs.
Conversely, the Pistons were winless in their four matches losing to the Grizzlies, Thunder, Pelicans, and Knicks.
The clubs last faced each other on March 17th with the Pistons winning 134-120 and taking the season series 3-1. The Pistons hold the all-time record between the squads with 68 victories in 119 meetings.
Orlando Magic
Although the Magic are expected to tank again this season they hope to strike lighting twice after winning the top draft choice in 2022. That led to the selection of Pablo Banchero who joins a Magic squad already chock full of young exciting talents.
Sophomores Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner headline a roster that also features Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, Wendell Carter Jr., and Mo Bamba.
The big question is the status of Jonathan Isaac who is expected to return this year after missing the past two campaigns healing from a torn meniscus and ACL but is hampered by a hamstring injury.
He’ll join a crowded frontcourt with Banchero, Wagner, and Chuma Okeke all playing the same position while Carter Jr, Bamba, and Bol Bol add depth at center.
Isaac was on the fast track to stardom prior to his injury and is considered one of the best two-way talents in the association. A strong return will force the Magic to decide if they should retain Isaac or move him to fill needs on the wing.
Detroit Pistons
Cade Cunningham begins his sophomore season with the goal of leading the Pistons toward their ascent back to prominence in the league.
Detroit has an interesting mix of youth and experience. In addition to cornerstone Cunningham Saddiq Bey, Isiah Stewart, and impressive 2022 rookie selection Jaden Ivey form the young core.
Veterans Cory Joseph, Bojan Bogdanovic, Nerlens Noel, and Alec Burks offer experience and voices to help teach their young counterparts.
Yet the dilemma for Duane Casey and his Pistons is while they might be an NBA League Pass darling they have to navigate growth while simultaneously not being too successful and risk losing out on the coveted prospect Victor Wembanyama.
This team feels like they could be take a leap but they have to keep this deep draft class and VW sweepstakes in mind.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Under is 5-2 in Orlando’s last 7 road games.
- Over is 4-0 in the Pistons’ last 4 overall.
- Magic are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
- The Pistons are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games overall.
Free Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Prediction:
Both clubs are worthy NBA League Pass follows but they are cognizant of the bigger picture so vying for a play-in seed while compelling and hard to deter the youthful core from aiming for has to be tempered with the bigger picture of landing a generational talent.
That said, it’s the first game of the season so both clubs will use this game as a measuring stick of where they stack up against each other and gain early bragging rights.
Cunningham and Banchero, in particular, will be a fascinating matchup but I like the Pistons to take this opening match however I like Orlando to keep the score close so take the Magic and the points.
