Wednesday, October 26th the Orlando Magic face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first of four scheduled meetings this season. Orlando will host again on December 3rd with Cleveland hosting April 4th and 6th.
Orlando last played Monday losing 102-115 to the Knicks while the Cavs last played Sunday defeating the Wizards (117-107) in overtime.
Last season the teams played three times with the Cavaliers winning two of the three contests. In an oddity, the teams are deadlocked with 59 wins each of their 118 matches all-time.
Orlando Magic
The tanking process continues for the Magic who remain winless through four games. Three other teams are in the same situation with 0-3 starts but Orlando is the only Eastern team without a victory.
Two of those winless teams expect to vie for the playoffs (Lakers, Kings) and the other is a fellow committed tanker (Thunder).
On the positive side of the equation, the top draft pick Paolo Banchero has integrated seamlessly into the pros averaging a healthy 22.8 points, 7.5 rebounds 3.0 assists, and 1.5 blocks.
He’s struggling from deep shooting 18.8 percent on four attempts per game. Despite being a rookie he’s already ascended to being the primary scorer for the team although Jonathan Isaac’s return may change that dynamic.
Although a young squad there is constancy from the majority of the roster returning. That familiarity however isn’t translating into their ability to hold leads or close games.
Case in point, the Magic led both the Pistons and Hawks by double digits but couldn’t hold on for the wins specifically struggling in clutch time.
The Magic have an extensive list of injured players including Mo Wagner (ankle) and Jalen Suggs (ankle) who are both questionable for Wednesday. Additionally, Markelle Fultz (toe), Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Gary Harris (knee) are all out indefinitely.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Although no one ever wants to see a player injured Darius Garland going down with the eye injury may in hindsight have allowed Donovan Mitchell to expedite his integration with his new team.
Granted, the backcourt duo will still need to figure out how they function together but it’ll now happen with Mitchell having more confidence in the Cavs system.
There is still work to be done by the Cavs who’ve beaten the Bulls and Wizards (lost to the Raptors) but through the opening week it’s hard to imagine them performing much better.
They enter week two with the fifth-ranked offense, sixth-ranked offense, and leading the association from the perimeter shooting a blistering 44.3 percent on 29 attempts per game.
On the flip side, it seems odd that the Cavs don’t capitalize on the glass (rank 17th) considering they have Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley manning the paint.
Dylan Windler (ankle) and Darius Garland (eye) are both questionable for Wednesday. Ricky Rubio (knee) is out until early January.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Orlando’s last 5 games against an opponent in the Central Division division.
- Cleveland is 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Orlando is 0-7 SU in their last 7 games on the road.
- The total has gone OVER in 8 of Cleveland’s last 12 games at home.
Free Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction
The perimeter could decide this game with the Cavs on fire from deep and the Magic ranking 21st allowing opponents to shoot 37.3 percent. Three (Pistons, Hawks, Celtics) of the four teams (Knicks) they’ve faced shot above their season average.
Orlando ranks higher (14th) on the boards and if they can improve their perimeter defense this might be the game where they break into the win column. Either way, I like them to keep the score closer than the spread.
