Thursday, April 7th, Southeast Division rivals the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets play for the fourth and final time this season.
Charlotte leads the season series 2-1 with victories on October 17th (120-111) and November 24th (106-99) while the Magic won the January 14th match (116-109).
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the Magic beating the Cavaliers 120-115 while the Hornets got thumped 115-144 by the Heat.
Last season, the squads played twice with Denver sweeping the regular-season series. The Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 57 of their 113 matches.
Orlando Magic
Despite their tanking efforts, the Magic have recently been playing too well with head coach Jamahl Mosley having to bench his starters to ensure losses.
Turns out they match up well versus the Cavaliers and granted Cleveland is missing both Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. However, on March 28th Mosley sat his starters for almost the entire fourth quarter to guarantee the loss.
This time around he didn’t take that route and they collected the win which had a major impact on the playoff seeding ensuring the Cavaliers will have to participate in the play-in tournament.
As much as the Magic spent this season with their eyes on the NBA Draft Lottery this team has been an NBA League Pass guilty pleasure.
Mo Bamba has shown growth, Wendell Carter Jr. is reveling in his new environment and Franz Wagner showed out giving reason to question if he was the better of the two rookies (Jalen Suggs) the Magic selected.
Gary Harris (personal) and Admiral Schofield (knee) are questionable for Thursday while Franz Wagner (ankle), Carter Jr. (wrist), Cole Anthony (toe) are all out. Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Bol Bol (foot) are out for the season.
Charlotte Hornets
While the Charlotte Hornets were on a hot streak winning eight of 10 games the last two matches reminded of why they’ve been fighting just to get in the play-in tournament all season.
First, on Saturday they gave up 144 points to the 76ers then on Tuesday followed up that blow out by allowing the Heat to also score 144 points.
That’s the issue with this Hornets squad – they simply don’t commit to playing defense for a full 48. James Borrego is lucky if his guys give him 10 minutes a game of defense.
That’s problematic because they already struggle to stop opponents in the paint or keep them off the glass. Adding Montrezl Harrell gave them energy but he’s not the type of front-court player who’ll pull down copious board or block shots.
Gordon Hayward (foot) was downgraded to out on Thursday.
