Wednesday, January 23 finds the Orlando Magic facing the. Brooklyn Nets as they meet for the second time in the 2018-19 regular season. In their last game on Monday, the Magic took down the Hawks 122-103. The Nets also played Monday defeating the Kings 123-94.
Last season, the Nets won three of four games and also took the initial meeting this year. The Magic hold the all-time record having bested the Nets in 62 of their 111 matches.
The Magic show signs stringing together wins and then promptly go on losing streaks. This has been their narrative all season as they sit just outside the Eastern Conference playoff seeds in 11th.
They are two and a half games out of eighth and will be embroiled in a battle with the Magic, Hornets, Pistons, and Wizards chasing the seventh and eighth playoff seeds.
The trade deadline will be telling as to whether the Magic are going to go for broke this year by trying to make a move and reach the playoffs or sell off some key assets like Evan Fournier, Terrence Ross, and Nikola Vucevic in order to strengthen their roster.
In the win over the Hawks, Fournier and Vucevic each scored 29 points to lead the Magic while Ross (16) and D.J. Augustin (15) also scored in double digits.
Aaron Gordon (lower back soreness) has missed the past two games but is expected to play on Wednesday. Timofey Mozgov (arthroscopic surgery on his right knee) remains out with no timetable for return.
The Brooklyn Nets enter the match on a four-game win streak and seeded sixth in the Eastern Conference. This team continues to battle and are making an argument to be considered as one of the upper tier squads joining the Bucks, Raptors, Pacers, 76ers, and Celtics.
That might seem like a stretch but consider the fact Caris LeVert was their best player prior to his injury and will be returning hopefully in the next month or two.
Rumors are the Nets will be shoppers at the trade deadline which could also serve to push them even higher up the East’s ladder.
In their win over the Kings on Monday, D’Angelo Russell continued his blistering offense leading the squad with 31 points.
Jared Dudley (left hamstring) will be out until next month. Dzanan Musa (left shoulder subluxation) is expected out until sometime in February. Allen Crabbe (sore right knee) remains out with no timetable for return.
Caris LeVert (subtalar dislocation in his right foot along with ligament damage) continues to rehab from his horrific injury with the Nets hopeful he can return in February or March.
