Sunday, December 1st, finds Western Conference rivals the Oklahoma City Thunder and New Orleans Pelicans facing each other for the third time in the 2019-20 season as they complete a home and home series.
Last season, the teams played four times with each club winning twice. This season they’ve met twice and the Thunder have won both matches. The Thunder hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 34 of their 59 matches.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Five of the Thunder seven victories are against the Pelicans and Golden State Warriors but it’s not indicative of the capacity of the Thunder.
At least seven of their 11 losses could easily be victories as the Thunder takes teams into clutch time more than any of their peers. Perhaps all that experience is paying off as they’ve won two of the last three games in clutch time and come back to cut deficits in both victories.
In the win Friday, Dennis Schroder led the way with 25 points scoring 14 in the final frame but it was Steven Adams who put the game on ice scoring the final four points via his 14 points, 12 rebound double-double.
With Hamidou Diallo out for four to six weeks, Billy Donovan had to reach into his bench and so far it’s Abdel Nader stepping up. Nader had back to back solid efforts scoring 23 in Portland and followed it up with 19 on Friday.
Danilo Gallinari (17) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Diallo will be out until early January with his hyperextended elbow injury and Andre Roberson (knee) has yet to appear this season despite the team saying he’s healthy.
New Orleans Pelicans
Brandon Ingram is having a breakout season which has to be rewarding after dealing with so much drama last year on the Lakers as well as the injury that put his health in jeopardy with blood clots in his arm.
General Manager David Griffin made great moves to rebuild the Pelicans quickly but not offering an extension to Ingram may have been his lone mistake. Ingram is averaging 25.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.
In the loss to the Thunder on Friday, he led his team with 24 points, eight rebounds, and four assists reflecting his season averages.
Six other Pelicans pitched in with double-digit efforts including J.J. Redick (16), Jrue Holiday(14), Jahlil Okafor (14), E’Twaun Moore (13), Jaxson Hayes (11) and Josh Hart (10).
Lonzo Ball (virus) missed the last two games and Kenrich Williams (ankle) didn’t play Friday with both questionable for Sunday.
Derrick Favors missed the past seven games initially due to lower-back spasms but remains out due to personal reasons and won’t play Sunday. Zion Williamson is projected to return mid-December and Darius Miller (Achilles) is out for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Thunder are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head contests.
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games.
- Over Under is 5-5 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups.
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction:
The Pelicans were close to winning on Friday in Oklahoma City but that was without the Thunder backcourt having strong performances. The positive for the Pelicans is OKC has a single road victory this season.
It feels like this could be a Pelicans win – but if the game is close the Thunder will find a way to win therefore….
