Two teams on very different ends of the spectrum meet as the OKC Thunder tips off versus the Memphis Grizzlies in a late matinee Friday.
Memphis entered the bubble with five teams chasing them for the eighth seed and holding a 3.5 game edge or more over the chase pack. Since then the Grizzlies have lost all four seeding games, while Portland who defeated Denver sits a half-game back.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Thunder have secured a playoff seed and own tiebreaks over the Rockets and Jazz who are two of the three teams fighting OKC for position.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Without potential Sixth Man of the year Dennis Schroder, the Thunder struggled to find a rhythm in their first match of the week.
Teams with length and who play with a slow pace have been an issue for the Thunder all season and the Nuggets, who are both, capitalized with a late comeback and overtime win Monday.
Facing another lengthy, slow-paced team in the Lakers who own the third-best defense the Thunder needed to regroup quickly.
And regroup they did. OKC led the Lakers from the tip, never relinquishing it. The Thunder held the Lakers to their lowest point total of the season and 3-point percentage.
The Thunder who ranked ninth defensively when the hiatus began now rank seventh by virtue of their second-ranked bubble defense with only the Raptors playing better on that side of the hardwood.
All five starters scored in double figures with Chris Paul (21) leading the way.
Steven Adams went down hard in the match with his leg bending awkwardly under him. Fortunately, the big man is okay and is expected to play Friday.
Terrance Ferguson (leg), Mike Muscala (concussion) and Dennis Schroder (personal) are all expected out.
The bubble has not been kind to the Memphis Grizzlies. Even before arriving in Orlando, Memphis learned the much anticipated return of Justise Winslow would have to wait until next season due to his hip displacement issue.
The seventh most difficult schedule became even more of a factor when Jaren Jackson Jr. tore his meniscus Monday versus the Pelicans and is subsequently lost for the season.
Memphis have lost all four seeded games and now face the prospect of the Thunder, Raptors, Celtics and Bucks.
A win by Toronto over Boston tonight might help the Grizzlies since that would cement seeding between those clubs and perhaps mean Memphis wouldn’t be dealing with the East’s top three seeds at full motivation.
NBA Betting Trends:
- OKC is 10-3 ATS in their last 13 Fri. game
- Under is 8-3 in MEM last 11 overall.
- Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Memphis has to approach this game like sudden death elimination. Lose and they drop to ninth behind the Blazers with the Suns 1.5 games back and without a bubble loss yet.
Similarly, the Thunder wants to retain the fourth or fifth seed so they want this win just as badly.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Thunder -3.5
The Grizzlies offered great entertainment this season and it’s sad their fate has taken such an unsavory turn but missing Jackson, Winslow, and Jones is simply too much to overcome.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
