Wednesday, March 16th, the OKC Thunder and San Antonio Spurs play for the fourth and final time this season. The Spurs hold the 2-1 edge in the series with wins on January 19th (118-96) and February 16th (114-106) while the Thunder won the initial meeting on November 7th (99-94).
Both teams last played on Monday with the Thunder losing 116-134 to the Hornets while the Spurs lost a shoot-out 139-149 against the Wolves.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Thunder winning two of the three contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 99 wins in 180 matches versus the Thunder.
OKC Thunder
Even when the Thunder tries to tank they don’t fully get the job done. They’ve won 20 games already and while that’s not a stellar showing or enough to get them a play-in seed it’s still too many to nab one of the coveted bottom three seeds.
The latter being desired as the bottom three teams at season end have the best NBA Draft Lottery odds to land the top draft pick.
The Thunder are in precisely the same position they were in a season ago sitting fourth from the bottom and have three fewer losses than the Rockets or Pistons and four fewer than the Magic.
With 14 games remaining they’ll be trying to lose out in an effort to change those dynamics. A few things are in their favor to achieve that goal. First, they have both matches to play against the Magic and one left against the Pistons.
Both those teams are enjoying playing spoiler which also benefits them. They have another five games facing elite teams (Heat, Celtics, Nuggets, Suns, Jazz) and one match versus both LA teams.
As for their fellow tankers they’ve helped themselves by losing the season series versus the Rockets, and Kings.
Aaron Wiggins (flu) was upgraded to probable, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (ankle) is questionable, while Derrick Favors (back) and Kenrich Williams (knee) were downgraded to out on Wednesday in San Antonio.
Josh Giddey (hip) and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (foot) are out indefinitely. Dort (shoulder), Muscala (ankle), and Jerome (hernia) are done for the season
San Antonio Spurs
After netting the illustrious victory that Gregg Popovich needed to overtake Donnie Nelson as the all-time winning coach the Spurs have dropped their last two matches to the Pacers and Wolves.
The latter was a shoot-out that featured a 60 point, 17 rebound masterpiece from Karl-Anthony Towns. Five Spurs scored in double-figures led by Dejounte Murray’s 30 point, 12 assist double-double and Keldon Johnson’s 34 points.
The trio of Lonnie Walker IV (22), Jakob Poeltl (21), and Devin Vassell (17) were the other double-digit contributors.
Doug McDermott (illness), Keita Bates-Diop (back), Romeo Langford (hamstring), Devontae Cacok (heel) are all downgraded to out on Wednesday versus the Thunder.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Oklahoma City is 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games.
- San Antonio is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
- Oklahoma City is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on the road.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of San Antonio’s last 5 games.
- Thunder are 22-8 ATS in their last 30 games as a road underdog.
- The Spurs are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games as a favorite.
Free OKC Thunder vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Analysis:
Although they are a tanking team the OKC Thunder is one of the most reliable bets against the spread this season. As noted, they are 22-8 ATS on the road as an underdog.
The Thunder never throw in the towel and subsequently they don’t get blown out nearly as much as some of their tanking counterparts. Coincidentally, the Spurs are another team who battles to the buzzer so that makes for an intriguing matchup. Albeit, the Spurs aren’t nearly as reliable to cover the spread.
Hence, I’m taking the Thunder and the points although I expect the Spurs to get the victory.
