On Friday, February 4th, the OKC Thunder, and Portland Trail Blazers will meet for the second time this season. OKC won the initial match on January 31st (98-81). The clubs will play twice more with Portland hosting March 28th while OKC will host April 5th.
Both clubs last played on Wednesday with the Thunder defeating the Mavericks 120-114 while the Blazers lost 94-98 to the Lakers.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Blazers winning two of the three contests. The Thunder holds the all-time record having bested the Blazers in 124 of their 244 matches.
OKC Thunder
This is the first of three games on the road and six of eight the Thunder will play away from home. On the season, OKC is 7-18 on the road and a slightly better 9-16 at home.
None of the players made the cut as a reserve for the All-Star Game although at one point many thought Shai Gilgeous-Alexander could be in the mix.
‘The combination of the Thunder losing and SGA suffering injuries didn’t help his cause. When healthy, the Canadian is lifting a heavy load for OKC. While that’s typical for top stars even those in the MVP conversation have more talent and experience surrounding them.
Many analysts look forward to how the youngster will perform once he does have more talent and experience on this squad and what his ceiling will be in those circumstances.
OKC won’t necessarily be an active player at the trade deadline although they could become the third team other clubs use to help facilitate trades.
That’s because the Thunder have available cap space and are open to taking on undesirable contracts if it means adding young assets or more draft picks.
As for players on the team who Sam Presti could shop the most likely is Derrick Favors or Mike Muscala but the most coveted will be Kenrich Williams.
Isaiah Roby (ankle) is questionable while Aaron Wiggins (ankle), and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (foot) were both ruled out for Friday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (ankle) will be out until after the All-Star break. Vig Krejci (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Portland Trail Blazers
Unlike the Thunder, the Blazers are likely to be active at the deadline specifically seeking to upgrade the depth on their roster. More accurately, to find players who’ll fit beside Damian Lillard.
Many have pondered the Ben Simmons situation and his fit with Lillard but VP Daryl Morey hasn’t seemed inspired to add CJ McCollum as the main player in the deal.
McCollum’s name has been linked to trades for several years although this year it seems far more likely he’ll be moved if the right asset can be obtained in the swap. Norman Powell who the Blazers traded at the deadline last year for Gary Trent Jr. is another name in the mix.
As for the latter that trade already looks like a win for Toronto given GTJ is younger, has improved defensively and is currently feasting offensively having taken another step this year.
Larry Nance Jr. (knee) is questionable for Friday. Cody Zeller (knee surgery), Damian Lillard (abdominal surgery), and Nassir Little (shoulder) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Oklahoma City is 3-12 SU in their last 15 games.
- Portland is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Oklahoma City is 2-9 SU in their last 11 games on the road.
- Portland are 5-15 ATS in their last 20 games against a Western opponent
Free OKC Thunder vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
Since the Thunder are actively tanking it would be easy to assume every game the young squad will struggle. Yet, as the win versus the Mavericks highlighted the players on this team aren’t the ones trying to tank – the franchise is.
As such, they’ll do their best to win regardless of the circumstances. On the opposite side of the court, the Blazers presumably are still invested in making the playoffs and are doing their best to register victories and stay in the playoff mix until Lillard can return.
