Thursday, the NBA Finals could conclude if the Oklahoma City Thunder can finish off the Indiana Pacers. OKC won on Tuesday, 120-109, to take a 3-2 series lead.
Indy held the second-best record in the NBA as of the New Year (OKC was number 1) and found their way to this stage of the playoffs via wins against the Bucks (4-1), Cavaliers (4-1), and Knicks (4-2).
OKC got their berth following victories versus the Grizzlies (4-0), Nuggets (4-3), and Timberwolves (4-1).
Season Series
Last season, the squads played twice, with the Pacers sweeping the series while the Thunder returned the favor this season, sweeping Indy. The Thunder holds the all-time record, having bested the Pacers in 55 of their 101 matches
This is the first time in history these two clubs are meeting in the finals, and both clubs are theoretically (Seattle owned the Thunder when they won a title) seeking their first championship.
OKC Thunder
I called for more from Jalen Williams three games ago, and he’s been on the rise ever since, including what could be dubbed (pun intended) the Dub Game as Williams delivered his best ever postseason match.
JDub registered 40 points while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played possum much of the match, overcoming his prior zero assist effort with a double-double of 31 points and 10 assists plus six stocks.
In fact, the vaunted Thunder defense was at its best in this match, producing 27 stocks (incredible) and multiple deflections as they clamped down, particularly in the final frame.
Thunder Stats
OKC ranked third offensively (119.2) and first defensively (106.6) with a net differential of plus +12.7, which also ranked first overall this regular season.
Notably, the Thunder’s record against the spread is 65-38-1 through 104 contests.
Thunder Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Nicola Topic, PG ( OUT for season — ACL)
Indiana Pacers
The big news out of Indy is the health of Tyrese Haliburton, who appeared to re-injure the same leg that he was nursing a sore ankle on.
For the first time in his playoff history, Haliburton failed to score a field goal and collected only four points.
He’s listed as day-to-day with a calf strain, but unless he’s had a miracle recovery, he’ll be far less than 100%
Rick Carlisle has options as T.J. McConnell is delivering, although his specialty is quick bursts of energy off the bench. Therefore, the Pacers will need more from Andrew Nembhard, who unquestionably had his worst game of the series.
Pascal Siakam has been the most consistent Pacer, but the Thunder are playing him aggressively and have found a way to hold him at bay in clutch time.
Pacers Stats
This campaign, Indiana possessed the ninth-ranked offense (115.4) and tied for 13th on defense (113.3) while their net differential of plus +2.1 registered tied for 12th overall.
The Pacers struggle against the spread with a 50-52-1 record through 103 matches.
Pacers Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Tyrese Haliburton, PG (questionable — calf)
- Jarace Walker, F (OUT — ankle)
- Isaiah Jackson, PF (OUT for season — Achilles

Free NBA Prediction:
They say finishing off a series is the hardest step, and that’s even more pronounced when it comes to winning the championship. OKC has that chance, but as a young team, they will feel the most pressure they have to this point.
They can draw upon the experience of the Nuggets series, which has closely emulated the progress of the Finals.
Every critical point of the game plans remains the same, particularly pace and rebounding. However, the two questions at the top of the chalkboard are:
1) Can OKC deliver on what they learned from the Denver series? and
2) If Haliburton plays, can he be effective enough to push the series to a Game 7?
Everyone who follows knows I picked the Thunder in preseason to win the title or that I picked OKC to win the Finals in five games … so, it should come as no surprise I’ll take them to win and cover in Game 6 as the franchise collects their first NBA Championship.
