Monday, November 7th the OKC Thunder and Detroit Pistons play the first of two scheduled meetings this season. OKC will host the second contest on March 29th.
The Thunder arrives having last played Saturday falling victim (94-108) to the unbeaten Bucks while the Pistons last played Friday losing 88-112 to the Cavaliers.
The Thunder holds the all-time record between the clubs with 74 wins in 143 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice splitting the two-game season series with a win each.
OKC Thunder
Although the Thunder have lost two games in a row there was no shame in losing to the unbeaten Bucks or the Nuggets who will vie for a home-court seed in the West.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to put up All-Star-worthy performances but is in a catch-22 as he deals with the fact his franchise will inevitably go into tank mode later this season.
The Canadian is averaging 30.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.1 blocks. He’s missed just two of his 57 free throw attempts this season for a robust 96.5 percent efficiency.
Sophomore, Josh Giddey scores 13.5 points which is the second-highest output on the team with only Luguentz Dort and Tre Mann registering double-figures too.
That highlights the main issue for OKC – finding enough offense to win games. They score 110.4 points per match ranking 21st although it’s their efficiency or lack thereof that’s the real problem as they shoot 44.5% from the field and 29.2% from the perimeter which ranks 27th and 29th.
OKC is in most games because of their tenacity and defensive effort forcing the third-most turnovers per match and scoring the second-most off those miscues.
To wit, they hold opponents to 111.8 points per contest which ranks 11th. Opponents shoot 46.4% from the field (tied 15th) and 35.4% from the perimeter (tied 14th).
Aleksej Pokusevski (shoulder) is out Monday. Chet Holmgren (foot) is out for the season following surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture.
Detroit Pistons
Like the Thunder, the Pistons are one of the teams in the Wembanyama sweepstakes and have a head start on losing having only collected two victories in their initial nine matches.
The goal for Dwane Casey is to help his young squad develop positive habits and put them in a position to win (but of course, not win too much).
Cade Cunningham is the cornerstone the franchise will build around and he’s stepped up averaging 21.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and a steal per game.
The young group he leads features Saddiq Bey (16.2 points), Isaiah Stewart (12.7 points, 9.7 rebounds), and promising rookie Jaden Ivey (15 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 steals).
These youngsters are faring better on offense than defense which likely isn’t sitting well with Casey. Opponents average 118.9 points (28th), shooting 49% from the field (27th) and 34.7% from the perimeter (11th).
In contrast, the Pistons score 107.3 points per game (29th) while shooting 42.7% from the field (29th) and 34.3% from the perimeter (tied 22nd).
Alec Burks (foot) and Jalen Duren (ankle) are questionable for Monday while Marvin Bagley III (knee) is out indefinitely.

Free OKC Thunder vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Prediction
This should be a competitive match as the young teams seek to show who is further ahead on the rebuild path. Later this season they’ll commit to the tank for Wembanyama but it’s early enough in the season to win a few games.
Although OKC struggles to put points on the board they are more committed defensively so take the points and the Thunder for the win.
