Saturday, October 22nd finds the OKC Thunder playing fellow Northwest Division rivals the Denver Nuggets for the first time this season. Denver will host the teams again January 22nd, while OKC will host matches on November 3rd and 23rd.
The Nuggets enter this match on the back side of their first back-to-back set of the season having played Friday in a winning 128-123 effort versus the Warriors.
OKC has the major rest advantage having been off since their season opener on Wednesday in the loss to the Wolves.
Last season the clubs played four times with the teams splitting the season series with two wins apiece. The Thunder hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 101 of their 191 matches
OKC Thunder
Although it’s clear Director of Basketball Operations, Sam Presti intends for the Thunder to tank again, the players are competitive and not playing to lose.
This OKC squad has tons of youth, athleticism, length and with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander a star capable of taking over a match. Despite trailing by double-digits (16 points), the Thunder came out of the half focused and erased that Wolves lead flipping it to six points in their favor.
Ultimately, the depth of talent on the Wolves rallied to win but OKC proved they can’t simply be ignored.
SGA led his young squad filling up the stat sheet with 32 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks. Josh Giddey registered a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds (plus four assists).
The trio of Tre Mann (12), Aleksej Pokusevski (11), and Luguentz Dort (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Jalen Williams suffered an orbital fracture that required a procedure and will keep him out until November at the earliest.
Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets weren’t about to go down 0-2 to start the season although the Warriors made them work for the win.
Reigning MVP, Nikola Jokic did the heavy lifting Friday serving up a triple-double of 26 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. It wasn’t as impressive as Pascal Siakam’s trip-dub but Jokic got the win which makes his more impactful.
The Nuggets didn’t play Jamal Murray as they’ve decided to initially only play him on one night of back-to-back sets and with this game being their home opener and fans being eager to welcome him back it makes sense they held him back for tonight’s game.
Michael Porter Jr. played in San Francisco and so far there is no indication he won’t play on consecutive nights so the Nuggets should have all their main players available with only Collin Gillespie (lower leg surgery) out.

On paper, this is an easy win for the Nuggets but SGA and this Thunder teammates aren’t ready to concede to tanking just yet so Denver will have to earn this victory. Because they’re at home and the fans should be fired up to see Murray I’m taking the Nuggets to win – – but I’m torn by how much they’ll win by.
Let’s just say I’m cautiously picking the Nuggets to win and barely cover.
